This silly (but true) little introduction serves to illustrate the somewhat confusing topic of how to use migliore<\/strong> and meglio<\/strong>, peggiore<\/strong> and peggio<\/strong>. Let\u2019s take a closer look with some practical examples:<\/p>\n

1.<\/span> Migliore<\/strong> (better, or the best) and peggiore<\/strong> (worse, or the worst) are both adjectives, meaning that they refer to nouns. More specifically they are the comparative and superlative forms of buono<\/strong> (good) and cattivo<\/strong> (bad):
\nle pizze di Bruno sono migliori di quelle di Giorgio<\/strong> (Bruno\u2019s pizzas are better than Giorgio\u2019s)
\nquesta pizza \u00e8 la\u00a0 migliore di Pontremoli<\/strong> (this is the best pizza in Pontremoli)
\nquesto vino \u00e8 peggiore di quello che abbiamo bevuto ieri<\/strong> (this wine is worse than the one we drunk yesterday)
\nquesto \u00e8 il peggior vino che abbia mai bevuto<\/strong> (this is the worst wine I\u2019ve ever drunk)<\/p>\n

N.B.<\/span><\/strong> in the plural migliore<\/strong> becomes migliori<\/strong> and peggiore<\/strong> becomes peggiori<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> Meglio<\/strong> (better) and peggio<\/strong> (worse) are adverbs, meaning that they refer to verbs. In particular they are the comparative forms of bene<\/strong> (well) and male<\/strong> (bad):
\noggi mi sento meglio<\/strong> (today I\u2019m feeling better)
\nquando fa caldo si sta peggio in citt\u00e0 che in campagna<\/strong> (when it\u2019s hot being in the city is worse than being in the countryside)<\/p>\n

However<\/span><\/strong>, in modern Italian you will often hear meglio<\/strong> and peggio<\/strong> used in place of the more grammatically correct migliore<\/strong> and peggiore<\/strong> when they follow the verb essere<\/strong> (to be):
\nquesti ravioli sono meglio di quelli<\/strong>, instead of questi ravioli sono migliori di quelli<\/strong> (these ravioli are better than those)
\nquesto vino \u00e8 peggio di quello<\/strong>, instead of questo vino \u00e8 peggiore di quello<\/strong> (this wine is worse than that one).<\/p>\n

Finally<\/span><\/strong>, meglio<\/strong> and peggio<\/strong> are used as nouns when they are preceded by the article il<\/strong> (the), meaning \u201cthe best\u201d and \u201cthe worst\u201d:
\nil meglio deve ancora venire<\/strong> = the best is yet to come
