The Italian verb mancare<\/strong> means ‘to be lacking in’ or ‘to be missing’. It is an important and useful verb which is well worth studying because we use it a lot in everyday conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> ‘to miss’ someone or something’ is expressed in the following way in Italian:<\/span><\/p>\n

mi manca la mia famiglia<\/strong> – I miss my family (literally: my family is missing for me)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

mi mancano i giorni caldi dell’estate<\/strong> – I miss the hot summer days (literally: the hot summer days are missing for me)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

non ti manca l’Inghilterra?<\/strong> – don’t you miss England? (literally: isn’t England missing for you?)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ti mancano i tuoi?<\/strong> – do you miss your parents? (literally: aren’t your parents missing for you?)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

mi manchi<\/strong> – I miss you (literally: you are missing for me)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> ‘to miss’ as in miss a target or goal is expressed in the following way in Italian:<\/span><\/p>\n

ha mancato la rete<\/strong> – he missed the goal<\/span><\/p>\n

ho mancato il bersaglio per un pelo<\/strong> – I missed the target by a hair<\/span><\/p>\n

other common uses of mancare:<\/span><\/p>\n

quanto manca alla partenza?<\/strong> – how long before we leave? (literally: how much time is lacking before the departure?)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

mancano dieci minuti<\/strong> – there are ten minutes left (literally: ten minutes are lacking)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

che ore sono? …. mancano cinque minuti alle dieci<\/strong> – what time is it? …. it’s five to ten (literally: five minutes are lacking before ten)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

mi mancano le chiavi<\/strong> – I haven’t got my keys with me (literally: my keys are lacking to me)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ci manca il latte<\/strong> – we haven’t got any milk left (literally: the milk is lacking to us)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e8 mancata la corrente<\/strong> – there was a power failure (literally: the current was lacking)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

oggi mi manca la voglia di pulire la casa<\/strong> – I don’t have the will to clean the house today (literally: today the will to clean the house is lacking for me)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

alla riunione mancava solo Giovanni<\/strong> – only Giovanni wasn’t at the meeting (literally: at the meeting there was missing only Giovanni)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

we also use the word mancanza<\/strong> to express a lack, absence or shortage of someone\/thing:<\/span><\/p>\n

sento la sua mancanza<\/strong> – I miss him (literally: I feel his absence)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

ha dimostrato una mancanza di tatto<\/strong> – he showed a lack of tact<\/span><\/p>\n
