Are you paying attention, and if so, how much are you paying? Here in Italy, we don\u2019t pay<\/em><\/u> attention, we lend<\/u><\/em> attention (prestiamo attenzione<\/strong>). This leads me onto the interesting topic of lending and borrowing. Interesting, because in Italian we use one verb for both actions: prestare<\/strong>. Let\u2019s have a look at how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

1. prestare<\/strong> = to lend <\/font><\/p>\n

mi puoi prestare<\/u> quella penna, per favore?<\/strong> = can you lend<\/u> me that pen please?<\/p>\n

mi presti<\/u> quella penna?<\/strong> = will you lend<\/u> me that pen? (informal)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

Paolo vuol sapere se domani gli prestiamo<\/u> la macchina<\/strong> = Paolo wants to know if we\u2019ll lend<\/u> him the car tomorrow (gli prestiamo<\/strong> Literally: to him we lend)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

ho chiesto a Geoff e Serena se mi prestano<\/u> la macchina<\/strong> = I asked Geoff and Serena if they\u2019ll lend<\/u> me the car<\/p>\n

Elisa mi ha detto che mi avrebbe prestato<\/u> il nuovo libro di Camilleri<\/strong> = Elisa told me that she would lend<\/u> me Camilleri\u2019s new book (mi avrebbe prestato<\/strong> Literally: to me she would have lent)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

ho promesso ad Elisa che le avremmo prestato<\/u> gli altri libri di Camilleri<\/strong> = I promised Elisa that we would lend<\/u> her Camilleri\u2019s other books<\/p>\n

Laura ha prestato<\/u> 50 Euro a Maria per pagare la bolletta dell\u2019acqua<\/strong> = Laura lent<\/u> 50 Euros to Maria to pay the water bill<\/p>\n

2. prendere in prestito<\/strong> = to borrow (literally: to take on loan)<\/font><\/em><\/font><\/p>\n

posso prendere in prestito<\/u> quella penna, per favore?<\/strong> = can I borrow<\/u> that pen please?<\/p>\n

domani Paolo prender\u00e0<\/u> in prestito la macchina<\/strong> = Paolo will borrow<\/u> the car tomorrow<\/p>\n

se prendiamo in prestito<\/u> la macchina di Paolo, possiamo andarci anche noi<\/strong> = if we borrow<\/u> Paolo\u2019s car, we can go there too<\/p>\n
