Homo Sapiens<\/em> is a Latin construction meaning \u201cKnowledgeable or Wise Human Being\u201d. Sapiens<\/em>, or in Italian Sapiente<\/strong>, comes from the verb sapere<\/strong> (to know), however in Italian we also have the verb conoscere <\/strong>(to know). These two verbs, conoscere<\/strong> and sapere<\/strong>, although both translating as \u201cto know\u201d, have different meanings, which are not interchangeable. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sapere<\/strong> deals with:<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing a fact:<\/em> so<\/span> che Giovanni arriva stasera<\/strong> (I know that Giovanni will arrive this evening); so<\/span> il suo indirizzo<\/strong> (I know his address)<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing how to do something:<\/em> so<\/span> nuotare<\/strong> (I can swim); so<\/span> parlare l\u2019italiano <\/strong>(I can speak Italian)<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing something by heart:<\/em>\u00a0sai<\/span> questa poesia a memoria? <\/strong>(do you know this poem by heart?)<\/span><\/p>\n

Finding out a fact: <\/em>ti telefono per sapere<\/span> se vieni al cinema<\/strong> (I\u2019m phoning to find out if you\u2019re coming to the cinema)<\/span><\/p>\n

Conoscere<\/strong> on the other hand is concerned with:<\/span><\/p>\n

Being familiar with a work of art (book, painting, music, etc.):<\/em> conosci<\/span> la \u201cMonna Lisa\u201d di Leonardo?<\/strong> (Do you know the \u201cMona Lisa\u201d by Leonardo?)<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing a place: <\/em>conosci<\/span> Venezia? <\/strong>(do you know Venice?); conosco<\/span> un buon ristorante<\/strong> (I know of a good restaurant)<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing a person:<\/em> conosci<\/span> Giovanni?<\/strong> (do you know Giovanni?). Notice that in the past tense conoscere qualcuno<\/strong> means \u201cto meet somebody\u201d: ho conosciuto<\/span> Giovanni a casa di Mario<\/strong> (I met Giovanni at Mario\u2019s house).<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words sapere<\/strong> implies having a knowledge that enables you to do something while conoscere<\/strong> means \u201cto be acquainted with\u201d. The English words cognition<\/em> and recognize<\/em> both come from the same root as conoscere <\/strong>and in fact recognize<\/em> (riconoscere<\/strong> in Italian) literally means to \u2018re-know\u2019 something or someone. \u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

So, beware! If somebody asks you: \u201cConosci<\/span> la canzone O sole mio<\/em>?\u201d<\/strong> they are asking if you know of or have heard of the song O sole mio<\/em>; but if they ask you: \u201cSai<\/span> la canzone O sole mio<\/em>?\u201d <\/strong>they are asking if you can sing it.<\/span><\/p>\n
