Today we are going to look at <strong>il condizionale passato<\/strong> (the past conditional). Here are a couple of examples of how we conjugate it, firstly with the auxiliary verb <strong>essere<\/strong> (to be):<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"4\" cellpadding=\"4\" width=\"535\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"261\"><strong><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\">Coniugazione del verbo essere:<\/font><\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"260\"><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\">Conjugation of the verb to be:<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"261\"><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\"><strong>io sarei stato\/a                <br \/>tu saresti stato\/a                 <br \/>lui sarebbe stato                 <br \/>lei sarebbe stata                 <br \/>noi saremmo stati\/e                 <br \/>voi sareste stati\/e                 <br \/>loro sarebbero stati\/e<\/strong><\/font><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"261\"><font size=\"3\">I would have been              <br \/>you would have been (sing, inf.)               <br \/>he would have been               <br \/>she would have been               <br \/>we would have been               <br \/>you would have been (plural)               <br \/>they would have been<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">This second example is built with the auxiliary verb <strong>avere<\/strong> (to have):<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"4\" cellpadding=\"4\" width=\"536\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"262\"><strong><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\">Coniugazione del verbo avere:<\/font><\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"260\"><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\">Conjugation of the verb to have:<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"262\"><font color=\"#000040\" size=\"3\"><strong>io avrei avuto                <br \/>tu avresti avuto                 <br \/>lui\/lei avrebbe avuto                 <br \/>noi avremmo avuto                 <br \/>voi avreste avuto                 <br \/>loro avrebbero avuto<\/strong><\/font><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"260\"><font size=\"3\">I would have had              <br \/>you would have had <font size=\"3\">(sing, inf.)<\/font>               <br \/>he\/she would have had               <br \/>we would have had               <br \/>you would have had (plural)               <br \/>they would have had<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font color=\"#666666\" size=\"4\">The past conditional is used:<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font size=\"4\"><font color=\"#4f81bd\"><strong>1.<\/strong> to express a regret:         <br \/><\/font><\/font><strong><u>avrei dovuto seguire<\/u> il consiglio di mio padre!<\/strong> = <u>I should have followed<\/u> my father\u2019s advice!     <br \/><strong><u>sarebbe stato<\/u> meglio partire ieri<\/strong> = <u>it would have been<\/u> better to leave yesterday     <br \/><strong><u>me<\/u> lo <u>sarei dovuto immaginare<\/u>!<\/strong> =<u> I should have imagined<\/u> that\/it!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font size=\"4\"><font color=\"#4f81bd\"><strong>2.<\/strong> to express disbelief, incredulity:<\/font><\/font>     <br \/><strong>chi l\u2019<u>avrebbe<\/u> mai <u>detto<\/u>!<\/strong> = who would ever have thought it! (<em>literally: who <u>would have<\/u> ever <u>said<\/u> it!<\/em>)     <br \/><strong>l\u2019<u>avresti pensato<\/u> che era cos\u00ec antipatico?<\/strong> = <u>would you have thought<\/u> that he he could be so unfriendly?
