We do, of course, have lots of snakes in Italy, but the mass of tourists who visit Venezia, Roma, Firenze and so on, are very unlikely to see them. However if you like to go out into the countryside and do a bit of walking, especially in the warmer months, sooner or later you will probably encounter <strong>un serpente<\/strong> (a snake).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Here are the <strong>serpenti italiani<\/strong> that you are most likely to see:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/coluber_viridiflavus500.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/coluber_viridiflavus500_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"coluber_viridiflavus-500\" width=\"554\" height=\"334\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>1. Il biacco<\/strong> (<em>Coluber viridiflavus<\/em>)<br \/>\n<strong>Nomi comuni<\/strong> (common names): <strong>frustone, verdone. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Molto veloce nei movimenti, arriva a 150 cm di lunghezza. Innocuo.<\/strong> (Moves very quickly, up to 150cm length. Not poisonous)<br \/>\nThe <strong>biacco<\/strong> is the most widespread Italian snake and we often see them where we live in Lunigiana in the north of Tuscany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/elaphe_longissima500.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/elaphe_longissima500_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"elaphe_longissima-500\" width=\"554\" height=\"265\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>2. Si arrampica facilmente sugli alberi. Innocuo.<\/strong> (Moves very quickly, up to 200 cm in length. It climbs trees easily. Not poisonous.) We once saw a 2 meter saettone happily slithering over a large bramble bush! <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/natrix_natrix500.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/natrix_natrix500_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"natrix_natrix-500\" width=\"554\" height=\"540\" border=\"0\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>3. La biscia dal collare<\/strong> &#8211; The Collared Snake (<em>Natrix natrix<\/em>)<br \/>\n<strong>Nomi comuni<\/strong> (common names): <strong>rospara, serpe d&#8217;acqua<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Molto veloce nei movimenti, arriva a 120 cm di lunghezza. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Spesso nei pressi di fontanelle e fossi. Innocua.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(Moves very quickly, up to 120 cm in length. Often found near drinking fountains and ditches. Not poisonous.) Predilige ambienti boscosi, umidi e ricchi di vegetazione. Innocuo.<\/strong> (Very slow moving, up to 150cm in length. Prefers humid wooded environments with lots of vegetation. L&#8217;orbettino<\/strong> (Anguis fragilis)<br \/>\n<strong>Nomi comuni<\/strong> (common names): <strong>biscia, orbettino<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Piuttosto lento nei movimenti, arriva al massimo a 50 cm di lunghezza. Predilige ambienti boscosi, umidi e ricchi di vegetazione. Innocuo.<\/strong> (Very slow moving, up to 50 cm in length. Prefers humid wooded environments with lots of vegetation. Not poisonous.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The <strong>orbettino<\/strong> is not actually a snake but a lizard which during its evolution has lost its legs. We find a lot of them on our <strong>orto<\/strong> (vegetable plot) especially during the colder months when we have to repair the old stone terrace walls where they like to hibernate. Geoff usually picks them up and moves them to a safe place. He once found a nest containing about six of them all tangled together like golden Medusa&#8217;s hair! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/vipera_aspis500.jpg\" aria-label=\"Vipera Aspis500 Thumb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 0px;\"  alt=\"vipera_aspis-500\" width=\"554\" height=\"325\" border=\"0\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/05\/vipera_aspis500_thumb.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">7. Last but not least, the one that you have to be careful of: <strong>La vipera comune<\/strong> &#8211; The Common Viper (<em>Vipera aspis<\/em>)<br \/>\n<strong>Facilmente riconoscibile dagli altri serpenti italiani per diverse caratteristiche<\/strong> (Easily recognizable from the other Italian snakes due to several characteristics):<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>pupilla verticale come quella di un gatto<\/strong> (vertical pupil like a cat&#8217;s &#8211; you probably won&#8217;t get close enough to check this out!)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>testa nettamente triangolare col naso rivolto all\u2019ins\u00f9<\/strong> (distinctly triangular head with upturned nose)\u00a0<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>disegno caratteristico sul dorso o colorazione completamente nera<\/strong>\u00a0 (characteristic pattern on the back, or completely black in color)<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>coda corta che si assottiglia bruscamente<\/strong> (short tail that tapers sharply)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Piuttosto lenta nei movimenti e difficilmente supera i 60 cm di lunghezza<\/strong>. <strong>Velenosa.<\/strong> (Very slow moving, rarely more than 60 cm in length.
