Today\u2019s post is written from the point of view of our two month old kitten Amber, and I\u2019ve kept the language fairly simple (well she is only two months old!). Words and expressions highlighted in<\/font> purple<\/font> are explained in the Grammar and Vocabulary section at the end<\/font>.<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

Una tipica mattina di Ambra, la nostra gattina di due mesi:<\/u><\/font><\/p>\n

Va bene! Ho fatto<\/font> colazione<\/font>, ho fatto ginnastica con Mim\u00ec, ho fatto innervosire Gigia, ho morsicato la coda di Coc\u00f2, ho fatto i miei bisognini<\/font>, adesso sono pronta per andare su di sopra<\/font> in ufficio a lavorare.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eccomi qui<\/font> in ufficio: prima di tutto mi devo affilare le unghie<\/font> sul tappeto di rattane, poi controller\u00f2 la cartella dell\u2019Internet Provider. Vediamo se ci sono tutte le ricevute di pagamento? S\u00ec, ci sono tutte<\/font>, benissimo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ora mi serve un numero di telefono, dove lo trovo, sull\u2019Elenco Telefonico<\/font> o sulle Pagine Gialle? Beh, per sicurezza li tiro fuori tutti e due<\/font>. E dov\u2019\u00e8 la penna per scrivere il numero? Ah, eccola l\u00ec dove l\u2019avevo lasciata<\/font> ieri sera. Come rotola bene questa penna, scappa da tutte le parti, non si vuole far prendere<\/font>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Toh, guarda un po\u2019<\/font>, c\u2019\u00e8 Serena sul divano che lavora al computer, vado a vedere se ha bisogno di aiuto. Uffa<\/font> quanti libri ci sono sul tavolino accanto a lei, togliamoli un po\u2019 di mezzo<\/font>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sono proprio cotta<\/font>, dopo tutto questo lavoro mi merito<\/font> davvero una pausa. Adesso mi faccio un bel riposino<\/font> sulla spalla di Serena.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Grammar and vocabulary:<\/font><\/u><\/p>\n

Ho fatto colazione<\/font><\/strong><\/font> = \u2018I\u2019ve had breakfast\u2019. First person singular present perfect (Passato prossimo<\/strong>) of the verb fare<\/strong> = to have, to do, to make. It\u2019s constructed with the auxiliary verb avere<\/strong> = to have<\/p>\n

ho fatto i miei bisognini<\/strong><\/font> = I\u2019ve been to the toilet (literally: I\u2019ve done my little needs)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

su di sopra<\/strong><\/font> = upstairs (literally: up above)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

Eccomi qui<\/strong><\/font> = here I am (literally: here I am here)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

mi devo affilare le unghie<\/strong><\/font> = I have to sharpen my nails. When we carry out an action on ourselves, we use the reflexive form of the appropriate verb, e.g. mi lavo le mani<\/strong> = I wash my hands (literally: myself I wash the hands)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

ci sono tutte<\/strong><\/font> = they are all there. Tutte<\/strong> (feminine plural) agrees in number and gender with le ricevute<\/strong> = the receipts (feminine plural)<\/p>\n

sull\u2019Elenco Telefonico<\/strong><\/font> = in the Telephone Directory. N.B.<\/strong> whereas in English we say \u2018in<\/u> a book\u2019, in Italian we say \u2018on\u2019, e.g. l\u2019ho letto sul giornale<\/strong> = I read it in the newspaper (literally: I read it on the newspaper)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

tutti e due<\/strong><\/font> = both of them <\/font>(literally: all and two).<\/font><\/em> We can use this construction with any number, e.g. tutti e tre<\/strong> = all three of them, tutti e cento<\/strong> = all one hundred of them. This construction changes according to the gender of the thing that it\u2019s referring to, e.g. tutti e tre i libri<\/strong> = all three books, tutte e quattro le ragazze<\/strong> = all four girls<\/p>\n

l\u2019avevo lasciata<\/strong><\/font> = \u2018I left it\u2019. First person singular past perfect (Trapassato prossimo<\/strong>) of the verb lasciare<\/strong> = to leave. This construction uses the auxiliary verb avere<\/strong> = to have. In this case the past participle, lasciata<\/strong>, is feminine singular because it\u2019s preceded by the direct object pronoun la<\/strong> (feminine singular) abbreviated to l\u2019<\/strong> because it precedes a vowel. non si vuole far prendere<\/strong><\/font> = doesn\u2019t want to be caught (literally: doesn\u2019t itself want make take)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

Toh, guarda un po\u2019<\/font><\/strong> = Wow, look at that! (literally: wow, look a bit) Toh<\/strong> is a sound expressing pleasant surprise<\/p>\n

Uffa<\/strong><\/font> = Humph! A sound expressing annoyance<\/p>\n

togliamoli un po\u2019 di mezzo<\/strong><\/font> = let\u2019s move them out of the way (literally: let\u2019s remove them a bit off the middle)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

Sono proprio cotta <\/font><\/strong>= I\u2019m totally done (literally: I\u2019m really cooked).<\/font><\/em> Cotta<\/strong> (feminine singular) is the past participle of the verb cuocere<\/strong> = to cook. It changes according to the gender and number of the person who is feeling tired<\/p>\n

mi merito<\/strong><\/font> = I deserve. The reflexive form meritarsi<\/strong>, to deserve, is more common than the non reflexive meritare<\/strong><\/p>\n

mi faccio un bel riposino<\/strong><\/font> = I\u2019ll have a little rest (literally: I make myself a nice little rest)<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n
