The Italian verb fare<\/strong> is one that students learn fairly early on. It is most often translated as \u2018to do\u2019 or \u2018to make\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

ti faccio<\/span> un buon caff\u00e8<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019ll make<\/span> you a nice coffee<\/span><\/p>\n

mi scusi, ho fatto<\/span> un errore<\/strong> \u2013 excuse me, I made<\/span> a mistake<\/span><\/p>\n

stamattina devo fare<\/span> un paio di lavori<\/strong> \u2013 this morning I have to do<\/span> a couple of jobs<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there are many occasions when fare<\/strong> can have different translations. Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. fare<\/strong> = \u2018to have\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

di solito faccio<\/span> la colazione verso le otto<\/strong> \u2013 I<\/span> usually have<\/span> breakfast at around eight o\u2019clock <\/span><\/p>\n

mi sono fatta<\/span> una doccia prima di uscire<\/strong> \u2013 I had<\/span> a shower before I went out<\/span><\/p>\n

2. far fare<\/strong> = \u2018to have something done\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

abbiamo dovuto far aggiustare<\/span> la macchina<\/strong> \u2013 we had to have<\/span> the car fixed<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ieri Giovanna si \u00e8 fatta tagliare<\/span> i capelli<\/strong> \u2013 Giovanna had<\/span> her hair cut<\/span> yesterday <\/span><\/p>\n

3. fare<\/strong> = \u2018to be\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

caspita, che caldo che fa<\/span> oggi!<\/strong> \u2013 wow, it\u2019s<\/span> really hot today! <\/span><\/p>\n

e tu Davide, che lavoro fai<\/span>?<\/strong> \u2026 beh,<\/strong> io faccio<\/span> l\u2019ingegnere<\/strong> \u2013 so what work do you do<\/span> Davide? \u2026 well, I\u2019m<\/span> an engineer (note that in this example we find fare<\/strong> with the meaning of both \u2018to do\u2019 and \u2018to be\u2019)<\/span><\/p>\n

4. fare<\/strong> = \u2018to let\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

ti senti di fare<\/span> una passeggiata?<\/strong> .. s\u00ec, fammi<\/span> finire questo lavoro e vengo volentieri<\/strong> \u2013 do you feel like going for<\/span> a walk? \u2026 yes, let me<\/span> finish this job and I\u2019ll be happy to come (as you can see, fare<\/strong> can also mean \u2018to go for\u2019i.e. fare una passeggiata<\/strong> \u2013to go for\/to have a walk)<\/span><\/p>\n

posso giocare col gattino, mamma?<\/strong> \u2026 s\u00ec, ma prima fallo<\/span> mangiare<\/strong> \u2013 can I play with the kitten, mum? \u2026 yes, but let it<\/span> eat first (in this case fare<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018let\u2019 is combined with lo<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018him\u2019, or \u2018the kitten\u2019 \u2013 to make fallo<\/strong> \u2018let it\/him\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. fare<\/strong> = \u2018to spend (time)\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

in luglio abbiamo fatto<\/span> una settimana al mare<\/strong> \u2013 in July we spent<\/span> a week at the sea<\/span><\/p>\n

quest\u2019anno ha fatto<\/span> le vacanze in Puglia<\/strong> \u2013 this year she spent her holidays in Puglia<\/span><\/p>\n

6. fare + vedere <\/strong>= \u2018to show\u2019 or \u2018to let see\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

scusi, mi pu\u00f2 far vedere<\/span> quella borsa celeste?<\/strong> \u2013 excuse me, could you let me see\/show me<\/span> that blue bag?<\/span><\/p>\n

ieri ho trovato una bella foto della mamma quando era giovane \u2026 davvero? fammela<\/span> vedere!<\/strong> \u2013 yesterday I found\u00a0 a lovely photo of mother when she was young \u2026 really? show it to me!<\/span> (N.B. here I have combined fare<\/strong> (to let) + mi <\/strong>(me) + la<\/strong> (it) + vedere<\/strong> (to see) to create fammela vedere<\/strong> \u2013 let me see it\/show it to me)<\/span><\/p>\n

7. farsi<\/strong> = \u2018to become\u2019:<\/span><\/p>\n

tua figlia si fa<\/span> ogni giorno pi\u00f9 bella<\/strong> \u2013 your daughter is becoming<\/span> more beautiful every day<\/span><\/p>\n
