In a recent blog I discussed some alternative translations of the verb \u2018fare’. See:\u00a0<\/strong>Il Verbo Fare<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In this blog I\u2019m going to look at one of the many idiosyncratic uses of fare<\/strong>. By combining fare<\/strong> with male<\/strong> (bad) we express the concept of \u2018to hurt\u2019. Let\u2019s find out how it works with a few examples of its usage:<\/span><\/p>\n

mi fa male il dito<\/strong> \u2013 my finger hurts. Here \u2018fa<\/strong>\u2019 (third person singular of fare) refers to il dito<\/strong> (my finger)<\/span><\/p>\n

mi fanno male le dita<\/strong> \u2013 my fingers hurt. In this case \u2018fanno<\/strong>\u2019 (third person plural of fare) refers to le dita<\/strong> (my fingers)<\/span><\/p>\n

ti fa male la gola?<\/strong> \u2013 does your throat hurt? (familiar)<\/span><\/p>\n

ti fanno male i piedi?<\/strong> – do your feet hurt? (familiar)<\/span><\/p>\n

le fa male la gola?<\/strong> \u2013 does your throat hurt? (formal)<\/span><\/p>\n

le fanno male i piedi?<\/strong> – do your feet hurt? (formal)<\/span><\/p>\n

gli fa male la testa<\/strong> \u2013 his head hurts<\/span><\/p>\n

le fa male la testa<\/strong> \u2013 her head hurts, note that le<\/strong> (to her) and le<\/strong> (to you \u2013 formal) are written and pronounced in the same way<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Farsi Male<\/strong> is the reflexive form of this construction. Here is how it works:<\/span><\/p>\n

mi sono fatta male al dito<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019ve hurt my finger, note that if you are female you say mi sono fatta<\/span> male<\/strong>, and if you are male you say mi sono fatto<\/span> male<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

mi sono fatta male alle dita<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019ve hurt my fingers<\/span><\/p>\n

ti sei fatto male alla gamba?<\/strong> \u2013 have you hurt your leg? (familiar)<\/span><\/p>\n

si \u00e8 fatto male?<\/strong> \u2013 did he hurt himself?, or – did you hurt yourself? (formal) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

attento che ti fai male<\/strong> \u2013 be careful or you\u2019ll hurt yourself<\/span><\/p>\n

abbiamo fatto un incidente con la macchina \u2026 accidenti, vi siete fatti male?<\/strong> \u2013 we had an accident in the car \u2026 oh no!, did you hurt yourselves?<\/span><\/p>\n
