I went back and had a look at the article and decided that it\u2019s definitely time to revise this topic. The original article is worth checking out as it gives an in-depth technical explanation of the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs, how to recognize them, and the impact this has on the construction of the past tense, so I would suggest that you might want to revise it first: <strong><font color=\"#00ff00\"><em>&#160;<\/em><\/font><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/transitive-and-intransitive-verbs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em><font color=\"#0000ff\">Verbi Transitivi e Intransitivi<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Today we\u2019re going to look at some practical examples of these two types of verb, and their construction in the past tense.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font color=\"#4f81bd\" size=\"4\"><strong>Verbi Transitivi<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>N.B.<\/strong> in the past tense all transitive verbs are built with the auxiliary verb <strong>avere<\/strong> (to have):<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>comprare<\/strong> = to buy:<strong> di solito compro il pane senza sale<\/strong> = I usually buy unsalted bread. Past: <strong>ieri <u>ho comprato<\/u> il pane senza sale<\/strong> = yesterday I bought unsalted bread<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>incontrare<\/strong> = to meet:<strong> ogni sabato incontro Luisa al mercato<\/strong> = every Saturday I meet Luisa at the market. Past: <strong>sabato scorso <u>ho incontrato<\/u> Luisa al mercato<\/strong> = last Saturday I met Luisa at the market<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>aspettare<\/strong> = to wait:<strong> Maria sta aspettando l\u2019autobus<\/strong> = Maria is waiting for the bus. Past: <strong><u>hai messo<\/u> il vaso sul davanzale?<\/strong> = did you put the vase on the windowsill?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><font color=\"#4f81bd\" size=\"4\">Verbi Intransitivi<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the past tense, some intransitive verbs use the auxiliary verb <strong>essere<\/strong> (to be), some use <strong>avere<\/strong> (to have), and some can use either. There isn\u2019t a fixed rule, so you\u2019ll need to learn them or to consult your dictionary.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>rimanere<\/strong> = to stay\/remain: <strong>Maria rimane a casa a studiare<\/strong> = Maria is staying home to study. Past: <strong>Maria <u>\u00e8 rimasta<\/u> a casa a studiare<\/strong> = Maria stayed home studying<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>andare<\/strong> = to go:<strong> vado a Pisa in treno<\/strong> = I go to Pisa by train. Past: <strong><u>Sono andata\/o<\/u> a Pisa in treno<\/strong> = I went to Pisa by train<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>viaggiare<\/strong> = to travel: <strong>viaggiamo spesso in treno<\/strong> = we often travel by train. Past: <strong><u>abbiamo viaggiato<\/u> in treno molte volte<\/strong> = we\u2019ve travelled by train many times<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>vivere<\/strong> = to live:<strong> Beppe e Laura vivono a Milano<\/strong> = Beppe and Laura live in Milan.
