The speaker crackles to life, and a distant voice, seeming to emanate from some far off continent, announces: Il treno proveniente da Parma, diretto a Livorno, \u00e8 in arrivo al binario due. I signori passeggeri sono pregati di allontanarsi dalla riga gialla \u2026. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: allora, ci vediamo fra una settimana, tesoro
\n<\/span><\/strong>Laura: certo amore, comunque ci sentiamo in questi giorni, no?
\nMarco: senz\u2019altro, mi telefoni stasera quando arrivi?
\nLaura: subito!
\nMarco: stammi bene, patatina
\nLaura: Ti voglio tanto bene
\nMarco: anch\u2019io .. dai, che il treno sta per partire \u2026.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A\u00a0hissing of high pressure air, a metallic squealing and a perfunctory hoot signal the train departure \u2026 a timeless ritual is played out \u2026 ciao amore<\/strong> \u2026 ciao, ci sentiamo presto<\/strong> \u2026 ci vediamo prestissimo<\/strong> \u2026 the lighted windows of semi deserted carriages flash past like frames from an old movie reel, the leaf chases the plastic wrapper back along the tracks again. Marco turns up the collar of his jacket against the cold lonely fingers of the wistful wind and, sighing resignedly,\u00a0heads towards the station exit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parting Words<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

My little story contains a small collection of expressions that we often use when saying goodbye<\/span>. Let\u2019s take a look:<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: allora, ci vediamo<\/span> fra una settimana, tesoro<\/strong> = Marco: so, I\u2019ll see you in a week’s time darling. Ci vediamo<\/strong><\/span> is the reflexive, or reciprocal\u00a0form of the verb vedere<\/strong> (to see). The literal meaning of ci vediamo<\/strong> is we\u2019ll see each other<\/span>. Some more examples:\u00a0 ci vediamo dopo pranzo<\/strong>\u00a0= I\u2019ll see you after lunch, ci vediamo pi\u00f9 tardi<\/strong> = see you later.
\nWe commonly use shortened form of these expressions, such as: a dopo<\/strong> or a pi\u00f9 tardi<\/strong> meaning ‘until later’, a domani<\/strong> = ‘until tomorrow’ and alla prossima<\/strong> = ‘until the next time’
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Laura: certo amore, comunque ci sentiamo<\/span> in questi giorni, no? <\/strong>= Laura: of course love, anyway we’ll get in touch in these days won\u2019t we?\u00a0 Ci<\/strong><\/span> sentiamo<\/strong><\/span> is the reflexive, or reciprocal\u00a0form of the verb sentire<\/strong> (to hear). The literal meaning of ci sentiamo <\/strong>is we\u2019ll\u00a0hear each other<\/span> e.g. ci sentiamo questo pomeriggio<\/strong> = ‘we\u2019ll get in touch this afternoon’, ci sentiamo in settimana<\/strong>\u00a0= ‘we\u2019ll get in touch during the week’<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: senz\u2019altro, mi telefoni stasera quando arrivi?<\/strong> = Marco: of course, will you phone me this evening when you arrive?
\nLaura: subito!<\/strong> =\u00a0straight away!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: stammi bene,<\/span> patatina<\/strong> = take care \u2018little potato\u2019 (a common\u00a0affectionate nickname)<\/em>, or literally = stay well for me<\/span>. You can also use the plural form when saying goodbye to more than one person:\u00a0statemi bene\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Laura: Ti voglio tanto bene<\/strong> = I really love you<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: anch\u2019io … dai, che il treno sta per partire \u2026.<\/strong>\u00a0= me as well \u2026\u00a0come on, the train’s about to leave \u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n
