I like its elegant facade, designed by <strong>Leon Battista Alberti<\/strong> in 1470, and besides,\u00a0it\u2019s always so quiet in there, a moment of respite before throwing myself back into the crowds at the nearby railway station and the noise and smells of the train journey home.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8697\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/02\/S.-Maria.jpg\" aria-label=\"S. Photo (CC) by Irene Grassi<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">I usually wander around\u00a0inside the church for a while,\u00a0before stopping\u00a0in front of <strong>Masaccio<\/strong>\u2019s fresco <strong>la Trinit\u00e0<\/strong> (the Holy Trinity), painted in 1426. I sit down on\u00a0a pew and try to take in the whole painting: its architectural background and the geometrical simplicity of its construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">According to some art historians, the architectural background is an homage by Masaccio to the genius of <strong>Filippo Brunelleschi<\/strong> (1377-1446), the architect who built the cupola of <strong>Santa Maria in Fiore<\/strong> and many other monuments in Firenze, including the church of<strong> San Lorenzo<\/strong> and <strong>lo Spedale degli Innocenti<\/strong>. However, according to tradition, the architecture of the fresco was designed by Brunelleschi himself. Public Domain<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Then there are the figures that form the composition: so few, yet so powerful in their blocky shapes and colours. They are enclosed by a perfect triangle that has its apex at God\u2019s head and its base beneath the two kneeling figures. The triangle contains a hierarchy: within the main architectural area which takes the form of a chapel, we find the Holy Trinity, with God placed at the top, followed by the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove, then Christ beneath. Below the Trinity, but still within the sacred space, are the Madonna to the left and Saint John to the right. At the very bottom of the fresco, placed outside the main sacred area, we see two human beings, the patrons of the fresco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">There&#8217;s one figure <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">in particular<\/span> that always attracts my attention, la Madonna: <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">she seems to look me straight in the eyes as, <\/span>with a simple gesture of her <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">hand, <\/span>she invites me into the picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8701\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/02\/Masaccio_trinit\u00e0_dettaglio_01.jpg\" aria-label=\"Masaccio Trinit\u00e0 Dettaglio 01\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8701\" class=\"wp-image-8701\"  alt=\"Masaccio,_trinit\u00e0,_dettaglio_01\" width=\"530\" height=\"747\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/02\/Masaccio_trinit\u00e0_dettaglio_01.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/02\/Masaccio_trinit\u00e0_dettaglio_01.jpg 616w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/02\/Masaccio_trinit\u00e0_dettaglio_01-248x350.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>La Madonna, or is it. Sig.ra Bianchi?<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">But wait, something&#8217;s wrong. I look more closely at her face with its strong harsh features. It&#8217;s a familiar face &#8230; and finally I realise that it&#8217;s the face of Sig.ra Bianchi, that friend of my mother&#8217;s who was a mystery to me when I was a child. She always wore a knee length coat and a head scarf, no matter the season.
