A while back I received a request from a reader asking me if I could shed some light on the word tanto<\/strong> and the many different ways in which it’s used. So, first of all, my apologies to Paul for taking cos\u00ec tanto tempo<\/strong> (such a long time. Literally: so much time<\/em>) to fulfil his request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Allora<\/strong> \u2026 a couple of years ago I wrote a post about tanto<\/strong>, in which I concentrated on its use to describe quantity. Today I\u2019m going to concentrate on some of the more idiomatic meanings of tanto<\/strong>, which can be pretty difficult to understand and translate if Italian is not your first language.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Few Common Expressions Using Tanto<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00e8 arrivata alla festa con tanto di smoking!<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

1. Tanto \u2026 quanto
\nGiorgio \u00e8 tanto svelto quanto preciso<\/strong> = Giorgio is as fast as he is precise
\nlo faccio non tanto per lui, quanto per i suoi genitori<\/strong>\u00a0= I\u2019m doing it not so much for him as for his parents
\nmi hanno deluso, tanto l’uno quanto l’altro<\/strong>\u00a0= they\u2019ve both disappointed me, one as much as the other<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Di tanto in tanto\u00a0<\/strong>or Ogni tanto
\ndi tanto in tanto andiamo a Lucca a trovare mio fratello<\/strong> = every now and then we go to Lucca to visit my brother
\nogni tanto mi viene la voglia di tornare in Inghilterra<\/strong>\u00a0= every now and then I feel like going back to England<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Con tanto di<\/strong> meaning addirittura con<\/strong> (not easily translatable)
\n<\/em>Angelina mi ha mandato il suo nuovo libro, con tanto di dedica!<\/strong> = Angelina sent me her new book, and she even wrote a dedication!
\nMario ci ha restituito i soldi, con tanto di interessi!<\/strong> = Mario gave us back the money,\u00a0and he actually paid us interest as well!
\n\u00e8 arrivata alla festa con tanto di smoking!<\/strong> = she arrived at the party, actually dressed up in a smoking jacket!<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Tanto<\/strong> meaning\u00a0comunque, in ogni caso<\/strong> (anyway\/in any case)
\n<\/span>\u00e8 inutile che tu insista, perch\u00e9 tanto non ti do nulla<\/strong> = it\u2019s useless insisting, because I won\u2019t give you anything in any case
\nLaura si impegna, ma tanto a chi interessa?<\/strong> = Laura tries very hard, but who gives a damn anyway?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. Tanto<\/strong> meaning\u00a0solamente<\/strong> (just for the sake of)
\nGiorgio parla tanto per parlare<\/strong> = Giorgio talks just for the sake of it
\nsiamo andati a fare una girata in macchina, tanto per fare qualcosa<\/strong> = we went out for a drive just for the sake of doing something<\/span><\/p>\n
