Here\u2019s a little article which I found in the Italian press the other day. The article itself is not exactly headline material, but\u00a0 it does serve as a useful tool for a bit of grammatical analysis. Rather than translate everything, I\u2019ve picked out some key grammatical point and elaborated on them.
\nN.B. to those of our readers who are nicotine dependent: don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not about to start preaching to you about your filthy<\/span> habit \u2026. \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n

(a.) <\/span><\/em>Quanto dovrebbero<\/span> costare le sigarette?<\/span> 13 euro a pacchetto, 13 euro e 7 centesimi<\/strong> (b.) <\/em><\/span><\/span>per la precisione<\/span>.
\n<\/strong>(a.)<\/span><\/em> How much should<\/span> cigarettes cost?:<\/span> dovrebbero<\/strong> is the third person plural conditional of the verb dovere<\/strong> = to have to. In its conditional form, dovere<\/strong> takes on the meaning of \u2018should\u2019, e.g. dovrei andare dal dentista<\/strong> = I should go to the dentist.
\n(b.) <\/em><\/span>to be precise<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(a.) <\/span><\/em>Il prezzo ideale del pacchetto di sigarette \u00e8 stato<\/span> calcolato<\/span><\/span> prendendo in considerazione<\/strong> (b.) <\/em><\/span><\/span>il costo del fumo<\/span> per la societ\u00e0. La compagnia di consulenza economica Microeconomix ha portato avanti un dettagliato studio, pubblicato poi dal quotidiano francese Le Parisien.
\n<\/strong>(a.)<\/span><\/em> The ideal price of a packet of cigarettes has been<\/span> calculated<\/span><\/span>: \u00e8 stato calcolato<\/strong><\/span> is the passive form of the verb calcolare<\/strong> = to calculate, which in this case is in the present perfect. In Italian, the passive form in the past tense is always built using the verb essere<\/strong> = is, e.g. \u00e8 stato detto<\/strong><\/span> = it has been said<\/span>, le due donne sono state viste<\/span> per l\u2019ultima volta gioved\u00ec<\/strong> = the two women were last seen<\/span> on Thursday.\u00a0 N.B.<\/strong> as you can see from the examples above this construction <\/span>changes depending on the gender and number of the subject<\/span>.
\n<\/span>(b.) <\/em><\/span>the cost of smoking<\/span> (literally: the cost of the smoke)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I 13 euro a pacchetto sono il risultato degli effetti negativi e positivi del fumo sulla societ\u00e0 francese: basti pensare che le sigarette costano 35,6 miliardi di euro alla societ\u00e0:<\/strong> (a.)<\/span><\/em> 16,3 miliardi di euro se ne vanno<\/span> in spese sanitarie<\/span>,<\/strong> (b.)<\/span><\/em> a cui vanno<\/span> aggiunti 3,3 miliardi<\/span> di <\/strong>(c.)<\/em> <\/span><\/span>imposte non riscosse<\/span> a causa della prematura scomparsa dei fumatori e 16 miliardi di perdite di produzione aziendale (pausa sigaretta, assenze per malattie, etc.).
\n<\/strong>(a.)<\/span><\/em> 16.3 billion Euro disappear<\/span> in health care expenses<\/span>: se ne vanno<\/strong> is the third person plural of andarsene<\/strong> = to go away or disappear, e.g. adesso me ne vado<\/strong> = I\u2019m going away now, Luisa se n\u2019\u00e8 andata presto<\/strong> = Luisa went away early. \n(b.)<\/em><\/span> to which must be<\/span> added 3.3 billion:<\/span> vanno<\/strong>, is the third person plural of andare<\/strong>. Andare<\/strong> is often used with the meaning of \u2018must be\u2019, e.g. questo prodotto va consumato entro 30 giorni<\/strong> = this product must be eaten within 30 days.
\n(c.)<\/em><\/span> uncollected taxes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(a.) <\/span><\/em>I cosiddetti<\/span> vantaggi<\/span> economici sono invece di 20,6 miliardi, e comprendono le tasse sui tabacchi e il risparmio sulle pensioni non versate ai fumatori deceduti. Il risultato \u00e8 che i fumatori “costano” pi\u00f9 o meno 15 miliardi alla collettivit\u00e0. “Chi inquina dovrebbe pagare, il principio \u00e8 questo” dice uno degli autori dello studio.
\n<\/strong>(a.) <\/span><\/em>The so called<\/span> \u2018advantages\u2019<\/span>: cosiddetto\/a\/i\/e<\/strong> is composed of two words: cos\u00ec<\/strong> = like this\/in this way, and detto\/a\/i\/e<\/strong> <\/strong>= said, e.g il cosiddetto<\/span> \u2018governo\u2019 Renzi non ha fatto un cavolo!<\/strong> = Renzi\u2019s so called \u2018government\u2019 has done fu@k all! N.B.<\/strong> as you can see from the example above this construction changes depending on the gender and number of the subject<\/span>.<\/span>
