Here’s another post in our ‘Helpful Labels’ series which is aimed at reinforcing everyday vocabulary. Simply copy or print out the phrases below and position them around your living space so that you’ll see them regularly. With time, the phrases will become embedded without you even noticing it! In this post I’m going to give you some simple phrases based on the theme of le pulizie di primavera<\/strong> (spring cleaning).<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lovely sunny day and it\u2019s time to brush away the cobwebs and get down to some serious spring cleaning. Allora, rimbocchiamoci le maniche e facciamo le pulizie di casa <\/strong>(Right, let’s roll up our sleeves and clean the house):<\/span><\/p>\n

Key verbs:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

pulire<\/strong> = to clean, lavare<\/strong> = to wash, spolverare<\/strong> = to dust, passare l\u2019aspirapolvere<\/strong> = to hoover\/vacuum (literally: to pass the hoover)<\/em>, scopare<\/strong> = to sweep, lucidare<\/strong> = to polish, mettere in ordine<\/strong> or riordinare<\/strong> = to tidy up<\/span><\/p>\n

Your Labels:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

apro le finestre<\/strong> = I’m opening the windows<\/span><\/p>\n

faccio prendere aria alla casa<\/strong> = I’m airing the house<\/span><\/p>\n

metto fuori i tappeti<\/strong> = I\u2019m putting the carpets outside<\/span><\/p>\n

sbatto i tappeti<\/strong> = I\u2019m beating the carpets<\/span><\/p>\n

passo l\u2019aspirapolvere in soggiorno <\/strong>= I\u2019m hoovering\/vacuuming the living room<\/span><\/p>\n

scopo per terra<\/strong> = I\u2019m sweeping the floor. Warning: the verb scopare<\/strong> is also the most popular euphemism for \u2018having sex\u2019! Therefore it’s safer to use the alternative verb spazzare: <\/strong><\/em>spazzo per terra<\/strong> = I\u2019m sweeping the floor<\/span>

lavo i pavimenti<\/strong> = I\u2019m washing the floor<\/span><\/p>\n

passo lo straccio per terra<\/strong> = I\u2019m mopping the floor<\/span><\/p>\n

spolvero i mobili della sala da pranzo<\/strong>= I\u2019m dusting the furniture in the dining room<\/span><\/p>\n

do la cera ai mobili<\/strong> = I\u2019m waxing the furniture (literally: I give the wax to the furniture)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

tolgo le ragnatele<\/strong> = I\u2019m removing\/getting rid of the cobwebs<\/span><\/p>\n

lavo i vetri<\/strong> = I\u2019m cleaning the windows (literally: I\u2019m washing the glasses)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

pulisco il bagno<\/strong> = I\u2019m cleaning the bathroom<\/span><\/p>\n

cambio il letto<\/strong> = I\u2019m changing the bed<\/span><\/p>\n

giro il materasso<\/strong> = I\u2019m turning the mattress over<\/span><\/p>\n

lavo le lenzuola<\/strong> = I\u2019m washing the sheets<\/span><\/p>\n

faccio una lavatrice<\/strong> = I\u2019m doing some washing (literally: I make a washing machine)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

metto le coperte a prendere aria<\/strong> = I\u2019m putting the blankets out to air<\/span><\/p>\n

metto in ordine la camera<\/strong> = I\u2019m tidying up the bedroom<\/span><\/p>\n

butto via l\u2019immondizia\/la spazzatura<\/strong> = I\u2019m throwing away the rubbish<\/span><\/p>\n

lavo i piatti<\/strong> = I\u2019m doing the washing up<\/span><\/p>\n

lucido l\u2019argenteria<\/strong> = I\u2019m polishing the silverware<\/span><\/p>\n

metto via i piatti<\/strong> = I\u2019m putting the dishes away<\/span><\/p>\n

riordino la cucina<\/strong> = I\u2019m tidying up the kitchen<\/span><\/p>\n
