Only a short blog today I\u2019m afraid because when I woke up this morning I didn\u2019t feel very well, non mi sentivo bene.<\/strong> So I decided to let you benefit from my illness by giving you a bit of vocabulary that you can use next time siete malati <\/strong>(you are ill) to have a good old moan to your family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ho mal di gola<\/strong>\u00a0(I\u2019ve got a\u00a0sore throat) <\/span><\/p>\n

Devo prendere\u00a0una pastiglia per la gola<\/strong>\u00a0(I’ll have to have a throat pastille).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ho il raffreddore<\/strong> (I\u2019ve got\u00a0a cold). <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Starnutisco in continuazione<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(I\u2019m sneezing all the time).<\/span><\/p>\n

Mi serve\u00a0un fazzoletto<\/strong> (I need a handkerchief). <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ho il naso bloccato<\/strong> (I\u2019ve got a blocked nose). <\/span><\/p>\n

Mi fanno male tutte le ossa<\/strong> (all my bones are aching). <\/span><\/p>\n

Ho preso\u00a0l\u2019influenza<\/strong> (I\u2019ve\u00a0caught\u00a0the flu). <\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly the word flu\u00a0is an abbreviation of the Italian word \u2018influenza\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(influence), as at one time it was believed that illnesses were the result of unfavorable astrological \u2018influences\u2019 (from Latin \u2018in\u2019 and \u2018fluere\u2019 meaning \u2018to flow in\u2019). With the development of medical science this was later modified to influenza del freddo<\/strong> (influence of the cold). The word influenza was first used in English in\u00a0the\u00a018th century\u00a0and was eventually abbreviated to the more commonly used word flu.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, back to moaning about how ill I am:<\/span><\/p>\n

Per fortuna\u00a0non ho la febbre alta<\/strong>\u00a0(luckily I don\u2019t have a high fever), ma ho mal di testa\u00a0<\/strong>(but I\u2019ve got an headache), devo prendere un analgesico<\/strong> (I\u2019ll have to\u00a0take a painkiller).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adesso <\/strong>torno a letto<\/strong> (now I\u2019m going back to\u00a0bed)\u00a0e<\/strong>\u00a0stasera mi berro\u2019 un bel vin brule\u2019<\/strong> (and this evening I\u2019ll drink a nice mulled wine\u00a0\u2013 in Italy this is a traditional remedy when you have a bad cold), at least that will be something to look forward to!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
