The traffic is surprisingly light, we compliment ourselves on having got up at five thirty a.m. and I feel a pang of guilt that I shouted at Gigia when she kneaded and purred me into wakefulness at five twenty. She knew that we had to get up. Like the other six (plus one) cats, she\u2019d been observing our frenetic preparatory activities over the past days, and simply wanted to help. Sorry Gigia!
\nNow, ahead of us, lies the potential chaos of Milano Expo<\/a><\/strong><\/span> 2015, located close to the ring road upon which we\u2019re now moving in a such a surprisingly fluid manner.<\/p>\n

Il traffico \u00e8 sorprendentemente leggero, ci complimentiamo con noi stessi per esserci alzati alle cinque e mezza del mattino e provo un senso di colpa per aver urlato a Gigia quando, alle cinque e venti, si \u00e8 messa a fare la pasta e le fusa per svegliarmi. We scan ahead for the telltale line of brake lights that all highway motorist dread, portent of interminable and often inexplicable hold-ups. We wait for the large signboards announcing our proximity to Milano Expo, perhaps even diversions and special lanes to deal with the mass of visitors \u2026 and then \u2026 unexpectedly \u2026 nothing happens. Yes, dear readers, we\u2019ve just driven within a few hundred meters of one of the biggest international events of 2015, and not a single sign. Nothing. It might as well not even exist.<\/p>\n

Scrutiamo davanti a noi per la linea rivelatrice delle luci dei freni cos\u00ec temuta da tutti gli automobilisti autostradali, presagio di interminabili e spesso inspiegabili intoppi. Ci aspettiamo grandi cartelli annunzianti la nostra vicinanza a Milano Expo, magari anche deviazioni e speciali corsie per far fronte alla massa di visitatori \u2026 e poi \u2026 inaspettatamente \u2026 non accade niente. Only in Italia! I can guarantee you that if it had been a local festival of the \u2018festa del fungo\/castagna\/gnocchi\/vino\/birra\u2019<\/em> variety (probably 99% of events in Italy centre around eating) we\u2019d have been seeing disproportionally large rustic hand painted signs advertising its existence for the past fifty kilometres, and would now be stuck in the kind of traffic jam where total strangers are out of their cars, chatting by the side of the highway, and exchanging phone numbers \u2026 \u201cs\u00ec, perfetto, se venite a Parma venite a trovarci!\u201d.<\/em> As I said, \u201csolo in Italia!\u201d<\/p>\n

Solo in Italia! But who\u2019s complaining? Not us! We leave the Milano ring road behind us with big grins of relief and amusement on our faces, and continue northwards towards the Alps, which loom majestically before us.<\/p>\n

Ma chi si lamenta? Noi no! Ci lasciamo alle spalle la tangenziale di Milano con grandi ghigni di sollievo e divertimento sulle nostre facce, e procediamo verso nord in direzione delle Alpi, che incombono maestose davanti a noi.<\/span><\/p>\n
