On the 10th of June 1940, when Italy declared war on England, my father was a young man of just 19 years old living with his family in Benghazi, Libya, which had been an Italian colony since 1911. Making the most of the fact that dad is living with us at the moment, I asked him to recount his experience of the Second World War in North Africa, one of his favourite pastimes these days. Here’s the first chapter of his tragic-comic tale:

“It was the 30th of June 1940, a Saturday morning, when upon getting home I found the postcard telling me to present myself at the HQ of the Duca d’Aosta barracks, base of the 21st Artillery Regiment. On the first of July I was enrolled in the local Militia and, without any training, they put me into the anti-aircraft artillery, as a gun aimer. I had to order the others where to point the gun, which was turned by hand. In fact our ‘artillery’ consisted of First World War field guns mounted on wooden carriages constructed in a way that gave them an upwards inclination. They didn’t even reach 2000 metres, whilst the English planes flew undisturbed at 2,500 metres”.

One night I was on guard duty, everything was calm, there was nothing to be heard, and so I fell asleep. At some point I woke up with a jump, the dogs had heard the sirens and started barking, so I immediately fired a shot in the air and started shouting ‘allarme, allarme’ … some guard I was!
