Believe me, I know the frustration of wanting to say something intelligent on a topic and ending up sounding like a complete troglodyte due to\u00a0having a\u00a0limited vocabulary. Everything you want to express an opinion on\u00a0is reduced to being simply\u00a0<strong>bello<\/strong>, <strong>buono<\/strong>, <strong>brutto<\/strong>, or <strong>cattivo<\/strong> \u2026 sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Of course, even when you have begun to build up a small arsenal of expressive words you still need that absolutely essential ingredient: self confidence!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">So, let\u2019s get assertive \u2026 let\u2019s give our statements\u00a0the opening that they deserve in the hope of at least sounding like we know what we\u2019re going to say.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4f81bd;font-size: large\"><u>In My Opinion \u2026\u2026.<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">There are various ways of preparing everyone for your words of wisdom, let\u2019s take a look:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>secondo me<\/strong> = in my opinion (literally: according to me), <em>example:<\/em> <strong>secondo me oggi sar\u00e0 molto caldo<\/strong> (in my opinion it\u2019ll be very hot today)<br \/>\n<strong>a mio avviso<\/strong> = in my opinion, <em>example:<\/em><strong> a mio avviso\u00a0hai sbagliato<\/strong> (in my opinion you\u2019ve made a mistake)<br \/>\n<strong>a mio parere<\/strong> = in my opinion, <em>example:<\/em> <strong>a mio parere dovevano piantare qualche albero per creare un po\u2019 d\u2019ombra<\/strong> (in my opinion they should have planted some trees to create a bit of shade)<br \/>\n<strong>a mio giudizio<\/strong> = in\u00a0 my opinion,<em> example:<\/em> <strong>a mio giudizio bisogna\u00a0 mettere a posto quella casa diroccata al pi\u00f9 presto<\/strong>\u00a0(in my opinion that crumbling house needs sorting out as soon as possible)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Of the above, <strong>secondo me<\/strong> is probably the most commonly used in colloquial speech, so if you want to practice using just one of these \u2026 <strong>secondo me \u00e8 meglio imparare\u00a0l\u2019espressione \u2018secondo me\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(in my opinion it\u2019s best to learn the expression\u00a0\u2018<strong>secondo me\u2019<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9644\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/ombra.jpg\" aria-label=\"Ombra\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9644\" class=\"wp-image-9644\"  alt=\"When I'm big I'll make shade for your children\" width=\"520\" height=\"347\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/ombra.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/ombra.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/ombra-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>When I&#8217;m big I&#8217;ll make shade for your children &#8230; think about it.<br \/><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #4f81bd;font-size: large\"><u>I Believe \u2026\u2026.<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Now here\u2019s where things start to get slightly more complicated because we\u2019re moving into the dreaded territory of the <strong>congiuntivo<\/strong> (subjunctive). In the examples below I\u2019ve highlighted the <strong>congiuntivo<\/strong>\u00a0in <span style=\"color: #9b00d3\">purple<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>credo che<\/strong> = I believe that, <em>example:<\/em> <strong>credo che <span style=\"color: #9b00d3\">sia<\/span> meglio partire presto<\/strong> (I believe that it&#8217;s better to leave early)<br \/>\n<strong>penso che<\/strong> = I think that,<em> example:<\/em> <strong>penso che <span style=\"color: #9b00d3\">abbiano<\/span> fatto un buon lavoro<\/strong> (I think that they\u2019ve done a good job)<br \/>\n<strong>ritengo che<\/strong> = I retain that <span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>(n.b. more formal than <strong>credo che<\/strong> and <strong>penso che<\/strong>)<\/em><\/span>, <em>example:<\/em> <strong>ritengo che i politici <span style=\"color: #9b00d3\">pensino<\/span> solo ai propri interessi<\/strong> (I retain that politicians only think about their own interests)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9645\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/20130227-gatto.jpg\" aria-label=\"20130227 Gatto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9645\" class=\"wp-image-9645 size-full\"  alt=\"20130227-gatto\" width=\"320\" height=\"316\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/20130227-gatto.jpg\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>Politicians &#8230;.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">N.B. verbs that express an opinion, such as <strong>credo<\/strong>, <strong>penso<\/strong>, and <strong>ritengo<\/strong> are followed by <strong>che<\/strong> plus the subjunctive. However, if the action takes place in the future you can optionally use the simple future instead of the subjunctive, <em>example:<\/em> <strong>credo che sar\u00e0 meglio partire presto<\/strong> (I believe that it will be better to leave early)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">to say what you don\u2019t believe\/think etc. just add a <strong>non<\/strong> at the beginning:<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>non credo che<\/strong> = I don&#8217;t believe that \u2026<br \/>\n<strong>non penso che<\/strong> = I\u00a0don&#8217;t think that \u2026<br \/>\n<strong>non ritengo che<\/strong> = I\u00a0don&#8217;t retain that \u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>(don\u2019t you just love it when things are that simple?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Segoe Print;font-size: large;color: #000080\">Alla Prossima &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"320\" height=\"316\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/07\/20130227-gatto.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><p>Last week, in my blog In Che Condizioni E\u2019\u00a0I wrote about the importance of developing a vocabulary of descriptive adjectives in Italian.
