The sentence above illustrates a very common Italian phrase: ‘avere voglia di fare qualcosa’<\/strong>. This can be translated as:<\/p>\n

to feel like doing something<\/span>
\n to fancy doing something<\/span>
\n to want to do something<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s have a look at a few everyday examples:<\/p>\n

non ho voglia di andare al lavoro stamattina!<\/strong> = I don’t feel like going to work this morning!
\nhai voglia di fare un giro in bici?<\/strong> = do you fancy going for a bike ride?

\n craving<\/span><\/p>\n

in questo momento ho proprio voglia di farmi una bella doccia fresca<\/strong> = right now I long for a nice cool shower
\nLucia ha una gran voglia per la cioccolata<\/strong> = Lucia has a craving for chocolate
\nabbiamo sempre avuto una gran voglia di andare in Sicilia<\/strong> = we’ve always had a desire to go to Sicily
\nhai davvero voglia di andare a trovare Marco, vero?<\/strong> = you’re really dying to go and see Marco, aren’t you?<\/p>\n

When we feel the need or urge to do something we use the expression mi viene voglia<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\n\u00e8 cos\u00ec triste che mi viene voglia di piangere<\/strong> = it’s so sad that I feel like crying<\/p>\n

When we loose the will to do something we use the expression passare la voglia<\/strong> or perdere la voglia<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

sono proprio stufo di questa faccenda, mi \u00e8 passata la voglia di fare ancora parte del gruppo<\/strong> = I’m really fed up with this affair, I’ve lost the will to be part of the group any more
\nquesta faccenda mi ha fatto passare la voglia di fare ancora parte del gruppo<\/strong> = this affair has made me loose the will to be part of the group any more
\nhai perso la voglia di finire il lavoro?<\/strong> = have you lost the will to finish the job?
\nmi \u00e8 passata la voglia di studiare<\/strong> = I don’t have the will to study any more<\/p>\n

Finally, a couple of idiosyncratic uses of voglia<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

a voglia!<\/strong> = you bet, for sure! ti piace il gelato? … a voglia!<\/strong> = do you like ice cream? … you bet!<\/p>\n

la voglia<\/strong> = the birthmark. Popular mythology says that a birthmark is a sign that the child’s mother had a craving (una voglia<\/strong>) that went unsatisfied during her pregnancy.
