Today we are going to find out how to use the indefinite article <strong>uno<\/strong> (a\/an) works.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9881\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/il_570xN.531147484_1sl42.jpg\" aria-label=\"Il 570xN.531147484 1sl42\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9881\" class=\"wp-image-9881\"  alt=\"il_570xN.531147484_1sl4\" width=\"520\" height=\"780\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/il_570xN.531147484_1sl42.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/il_570xN.531147484_1sl42.jpg 570w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/il_570xN.531147484_1sl42-233x350.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>Uno gnomo giardiniere<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: large;color: #3366ff\"><u>Rules for using <strong>uno<\/strong>:<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">1.<\/span> when a masculine word begins with the letter \u2018<strong>s<\/strong>\u2019 followed by another consonant, e.g.:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>uno spazzacamino<\/strong> = a chimney sweep, e.g. <strong>c\u2019\u00e8 bisogno di uno spazzacamino<\/strong> = we need a chimney sweep<br \/>\n<strong>uno scoiattolo<\/strong> = a squirrel, e.g. <strong>Renata ha dato uno scoiattolo imbalsamato a suo figlio Daniele<\/strong> = Renata gave an embalmed squirrel to her son Daniele<br \/>\n<strong>uno specchio<\/strong> = a mirror, e.g. <strong>voglio comprare uno specchio con la cornice dorata<\/strong> = I want to buy a mirror with a golden frame<br \/>\n<strong>uno scrittore<\/strong> = a writer, e.g. <strong>Giovanni \u00e8 uno scrittore di gialli<\/strong> = Giovanni writes thrillers<br \/>\n<strong>uno studente<\/strong> = a student, e.g. <strong>Marco \u00e8 uno studente molto diligente <\/strong>= Marco is a very diligent student<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">2.<\/span> when a masculine word begins with the letter \u2018<strong>z<\/strong>\u2019, e.g.:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>uno zaino<\/strong> = a rucksack, e.g. <strong>ho bisogno di uno zaino pi\u00f9 grande <\/strong>= I need a bigger rucksack<br \/>\n<strong>uno zerbino<\/strong> = a doormat, e.g. <strong>dobbiamo comprare uno zerbino nuovo perch\u00e9 questo \u00e8 tutto infangato<\/strong> = we must buy a new doormat because this one is all muddy<br \/>\n<strong>uno zio<\/strong> = an uncle, e.g. <strong>Giovanni ha uno zio centenario<\/strong> = Giovanni has an uncles who is 100 years old<br \/>\n<strong>uno zoccolo<\/strong> = a clog, e.g.<strong> uno zoccolo \u00e8 pi\u00f9 consumato dell\u2019altro<\/strong> = one clog is more worn out than the other<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"font-size: large\">3.<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">There are three more groups of words that require the article <strong>uno<\/strong>, but they are quite limited. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">masculine words starting with \u2018<strong>ps<\/strong>\u2019, e.g.<br \/>\n<strong>uno psicologo<\/strong> = a psychologist<br \/>\n<strong>uno psichiatra<\/strong> = a psychiatrist<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">masculine words starting with \u2018<strong>pn<\/strong>\u2019, e.g.<br \/>\n<strong>uno pneumatico<\/strong> = a tyre. N.B. most people tend to say <strong>un pneumatico<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">masculine words staring with \u2018<strong>gn<\/strong>\u2019, e.g.<br \/>\n<strong>uno gnocco<\/strong> = a dumpling<br \/>\n<strong>uno gnomo<\/strong> = a gnome<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>N.B.<\/strong> Unlike the definite article <strong>lo<\/strong>, when a masculine word begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) we use the article <strong>un<\/strong> without an apostrophe, e.g.:<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9884\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a-470x353.jpg\" aria-label=\"49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a 470x353\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9884\" class=\"wp-image-9884\"  alt=\"49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a-470x353\" width=\"520\" height=\"391\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a-470x353.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a-470x353.jpg 470w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/08\/49aa6e297dcbf641a036a9dfbb8a442a-470x353-350x263.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><em>Non sono mai salita su un elefante &#8230;ma questo elefante s\u00ec!<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>un albero<\/strong> = a tree, e.g. <strong>ho un albero di mele carico di frutti<\/strong> = I have an apple tree that&#8217;s full of fruit<br \/>\n<strong>un elefante<\/strong> = an elephant, e.g. <strong>non sono mai salita su un elefante <\/strong>= I\u2019ve never climbed onto an elephant<br \/>\n<strong>un imbuto <\/strong>= a funnel, e.g. <strong>mi passi un imbuto, per favore?<\/strong> = can you pass me a funnel, please?<br \/>\n<strong>un ombrello<\/strong> = an umbrella, e.g. <strong>vuoi prendere in prestito un ombrello, che piove?<\/strong> = Would you like to borrow an umbrella since it\u2019s raining?<br \/>\n<strong>un uscio<\/strong> = a house door, e.g. <strong>la casa aveva un uscio in castagno molto antico <\/strong>= the house had a very old door made of chestnut wood<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">At the end of my previous post I asked you to have a go at putting the correct definite articles into the given sentences.
