Addirittura<\/strong> is one of those words that often gets overlooked in classes and grammar books, but happens to be quite common, and very useful. It has two main uses:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. addirittura?!<\/strong><\/span> = a polite exclamation of surprise and\/or disbelief.
\nTranslation: really?!, seriously?!<\/span>
\n Synonyms: davvero?! sul serio?!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few typical examples of its use:<\/p>\n

Serena: \u201cLo sapevi che Ambra ha avuto quattro gattini?\u201d. Luisa: \u201cAddirittura, quattro?!\u201d<\/strong> = Serena: \u201cDid you know that Ambra has had four kittens?\u201d. Luisa: \u201cReally, four!?\u201d<\/p>\n

Giovanni: \u201cAvevo cos\u00ec tanta fame che mi sono mangiato un intero pollo arrosto\u201d. Piero: \u201cAddirittura, un intero pollo arrosto?!\u201d<\/strong> = Giovanni: \u201cI was so hungry that I ate a whole roast chicken\u201d. Piero: \u201cSeriously, a whole roast chicken?!\u201d<\/p>\n

Vincenza: \u201cPer il compleanno di Clara sua nonna \u00e8 venuta apposta dall\u2019Australia\u201d. Serena: \u201cAddirittura?!\u201d<\/strong> = Vincenza: \u201cClara\u2019s grandmother came from Australia just (purposely)<\/em> for her birthday\u201d. Serena: \u201cReally?!\u201d<\/p>\n

Annalisa: \u201cQuelle scarpe sono belle ma vogliono duecento Euro!\u201d. Claudio: \u201cAddirittura, duecento?! … sono dei ladri!\u201d<\/strong> = Annalisa: \u201cThose shoes are beautiful but they want two hundred Euro for them!\u201d. Claudio: \u201cYou are kidding, two hundred?! … they’re thieves!\u201d<\/p>\n

Ian: \u201cIl prossimo inverno voglio scalare l\u2019Everest\u201d. Geoff: \u201cAddirittura, l’Everest, ma sei fuori?!\u201d<\/strong> = Ian: \u201cNext winter I want to climb the Everest\u201d. Geoff: \u201cSeriously, Everest, are you crazy?!\u201d<\/p>\n

2. addirittura<\/strong><\/span> = adverb used to emphasize something out of the ordinary.
\nTranslation: even, actually<\/span>
\n Synonyms: perfino, pure<\/strong><\/span>
\nN.B. this one is less easy to translate literally so study the following examples carefully:<\/p>\n

Giovanni era cos\u00ec affamato che dopo la cena ha mangiato addirittura tre gelati<\/strong> = Giovanni was so hungry, that after dinner he actually ate three ice creams<\/p>\n

Che sonno che c\u2019ho! Ho bevuto addirittura quattro caff\u00e8 ma non riesco a svegliarmi!<\/strong> = I\u2019m so sleepy! I even had four cups of coffee, but I can’t wake up!<\/p>\n

Il camion si muoveva con tanta lentezza da sembrare addirittura fermo<\/strong> = The lorry was moving so slowly that it actually looked like it was standing still<\/p>\n
