Following Serena\u2019s recent article Anyone Want A Kitten<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em>, a reader asked us why we hadn\u2019t had Amber sterilised. I thought that my reply might be a good opportunity to do something that we haven\u2019t done in a while: an English to Italian translation. So, here is my explanation of the Amber situation, with Serena\u2019s eloquent translation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sterilised \u2026 to be honest, just the sound of the word makes me feel slightly ill at ease. Well, as I\u2019ve so often been told, I\u2019m a sensitive bloke.

Growing up in a household of females and animals (four younger sisters and just about any variety of mammal, reptile, fish or bird that you could imagine) must have nurtured that side of my nature.

As a kid exploring the Suffolk countryside, I frequently came home from my \u2018voyages\u2019 with orphaned baby rabbits, hedgehogs, sparrows and so on.

I remember once, when I was about seven, finding the beautiful head of a rabbit that had probably been torn off by a hungry fox. I brought it home and kept it in a secret place behind our house, where I watched it for the next few days with a mixture of fascination and disgust as maggots writhed out of its eye sockets.

Of course, my mother eventually discovered the source of the terrible smell that came through the kitchen window and promptly consigned my \u2018pet\u2019 to the dustbin, much to my chagrin.

Perhaps, from the brief sketch that I\u2019ve given you so far, you can begin to guess why I let Amber have her family. But it\u2019s worth remembering the circumstances of Amber\u2019s arrival in our household.

Little Amber was abandoned and left to the horrible fate of being eaten alive by fly larvae when she was just a few days old. She was saved by the fact that I was attracted by her frantic final cries for help from the bottom of our garden. Serena, myself and our other cats, are all the family that Amber has ever had. Of the four other female cats that have adopted us Mim\u00ec and Jenny had kittens before we had them sterilised. But Gigia and Bella were sterilized whilst still young, and have never had their own litter.
\nSerena, io e gli altri nostri gatti siamo tutta la famiglia che Ambra ha mai avuto. Delle altre quattro gatte che ci hanno adottato, Mim\u00ec e Jenny hanno avuto gattini prima che le facessimo sterilizzare. I had always felt a pang of guilt about depriving those two of the most natural thing in the world, their very purpose for being here, and consequently just couldn\u2019t bring myself to do the same thing to our little orphan, Amber.

Did I have any doubts about making that decision? Of course! How would we manage with even more felines to feed? But\u00a0we always do manage, and things somehow tend to work out alright in the end.

So, here we are with our four precious new arrivals. Was it the right decision? Absolutely! One glance at Amber curled carefully inside her basket, enfolding and protecting and nurturing her little ones, and purring in the most contented way imaginable, is enough to completely reassure me that I did the right thing.
\nE cos\u00ec eccoci qui coi nostri preziosi nuovi arrivi. E’ stata la decisione giusta? Senz’altro! Un’occhiata ad Ambra accuratamente acciambellata nella sua cesta, che avvolge, protegge e nutre i suoi piccoli, e fa le fusa nel modo pi\u00f9 contento immaginabile, \u00e8 sufficiente a rassicurarmi totalmente che ho fatto la cosa giusta.<\/span><\/p>\n
