The other day as I walked into my parents’ apartment, I heard their carer, Luisa, talking on her cell phone in a \u2018foreign\u2019 language. My first thought was: \u201cOh, Luisa is speaking Romanian!\u201d I was probably influenced by the fact that here in Pontremoli the vast majority of badanti<\/strong> (carers) are in fact Romanian. However, after a moment’s reflection I remembered that Luisa is Italian, to be precise half Siciliana and half Calabrese, and in fact as I paid a bit more attention, I recognised the word mughieri<\/strong>, Sicilian for moglie<\/strong> (wife). Later on, inspired by having heard Luisa speaking Sicilian, I decided to ask her if she could recommend me a traditional Sicilian song to share with our Italian blog readers. After a moment’s reflection she replied: “Sciuri Sciuri, senza dubbio! E’ scritto S-C-I-U-R-I”<\/strong> .<\/p>\n

Later, when I looked up the title of this song on the Internet, I discovered that there are two ways of spelling it: Sciuri <\/strong>or Ciuri<\/strong>, Sicilian for fiore<\/strong> = flower. This is due to the fact that the pronunciation changes depending on the local dialect.<\/p>\n

The music of Sciuri Sciuri<\/strong> was composed in 1883 by maestro Francesco Paolo Frontini<\/strong>, but the author of the lyrics is unknown. It is\u00a0 an ironic song describing the end of a love story and, as with many folk songs, it has numerous variations, which you can find on this link, written all in Sicilian!
