The Japanese language has many examples of words that are contracted or abbreviated for convenience. For example the word \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8<\/strong>is often used to mean \u2018department store\u201d in Japanese. However, \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8 <\/strong>is a contracted form of \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8\u30e1\u30f3\u30c8\u30b9\u30c8\u30a2<\/strong>. When you think about it, \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8<\/strong> is much easier to say than \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8\u30e1\u30f3\u30c8\u30b9\u30c8\u30a2<\/strong>. Some people wrongly assume that Japanese people don\u2019t understand English because they think that words like \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8<\/strong> are the original translations of English words into Japanese. What they don\u2019t realize is that words like \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8<\/strong> are not the original, but the contracted forms of the original word. If you look at the word \u30c7\u30d1\u30fc\u30c8\u30e1\u30f3\u30c8\u30b9\u30c8\u30a2<\/strong>, I would say that\u2019s pretty close to the English word for \u2018department store\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just foreign words that are abbreviated. Japanese people sometimes refer to Tokyo University as \u3068\u3046\u3060\u3044<\/strong>, which is a contracted form of \u3068\u3046\u304d\u3087\u3046\u3060\u3044\u304c\u304f<\/strong>. Words can be further abbreviated by using the initial letters of compound words. For example OL is a contracted form of \u30aa\u30fc\u30a8\u30eb<\/strong>, which means \u2018office lady\u2019. Only the \u2018o\u2019 from \u2018office\u2019 and the \u2018l\u2019 from \u2018lady\u2019 are combined to form this word. Some of these contracted words are so common, people don\u2019t always know the full-length terminology that originated from these contracted words. Take a look at the contracted words below.
