Well, it has finally happened. The \u6885\u96e8 (\u3064\u3086\/rainy season) has begun! I grew up on the coast of \u30ab\u30ca\u30c0\u306e\u6771 (\u304b\u306a\u3060\u306e\u3072\u304c\u3057\/eastern Canada), so I have always been intimately familiar with \u96e8(\u3042\u3081\/rain), but it was only after I moved to \u65e5\u672c (\u306b\u307b\u3093\/Japan) in \u516d\u6708 (\u308d\u304f\u304c\u3064\/June), that I finally understood what the term “rainy season” \u6885\u96e8really meant. Note the use of the \u6885 (\u3046\u3081\/Japanese plum) character along with the \u96e8 character, which is used because the \u6885\u96e8 coincides with the \u6885 harvesting season, like the “strawberry moon” is the full moon that happens during strawberry season).<\/p>\n

It was hard for me to believe that a city could go for days, perhaps even weeks, with \u96e8 nearly \u6bce\u65e5 (\u307e\u3044\u306b\u3061\/every day) and with almost no sunny days, but that was the \u5929\u6c17 (\u3066\u3093\u304d\/weather) I encountered when I arrived in Japan. It has been the case every single late \u6625 (\u306f\u308b\/spring) \/ early \u590f (\u306a\u3064\/summer) since. Once the \u6885\u96e8 starts, you really cherish those rare sunny days. It might not be as bad as the monsoons around \u30a4\u30f3\u30c9 (India), but it is cloudy almost constantly and \u96e8 falls very frequently.<\/p>\n

Still though, I actually enjoy the \u6885\u96e8. I have a small \u91ce\u83dc (\u3084\u3055\u3044\/vegetable) garden that seems to thrive in the wet, humid \u6885\u96e8. I’m also one of those weird people who loves thunder and lightning, which is plentiful during the \u6885\u96e8. Mother Nature’s \u82b1\u706b (\u306f\u306a\u3073\/fireworks)!<\/p>\n

Most importantly though, it’s the last time I can hope for comfortable temperatures. When the \u6885\u96e8 finishes, the temperature spikes up to around 35 degrees Celsius sometimes! I (and my \u91ce\u83dc) prefer the \u6dbc\u3057\u3044 (\u3059\u305a\u3057\u3044\/cool, refreshing), albeit humid, \u6885\u96e8.<\/p>\n

Then again, while driving home in a very heavy rainfall today, I had to drive through overflowing \u6c34 (\u307f\u305a\/water) 10-20cm deep on several occasions. Maybe it isn’t all that great…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"Lightning
