What is Tennoo Tanjoobi (\u5929\u7687\u8a95\u751f\u65e5<\/strong><\/span>)?\u00a0 Tennoo Tanjoobi (\u5929\u7687\u8a95\u751f\u65e5<\/strong><\/span>)\u00a0is a national holiday in Japan.\u00a0 Translated in English, it’s the Emperor’s Birthday.\u00a0 Which emperor are we talking about here?\u00a0 It’s the current and living Emperor Akihito (\u660e\u4ec1<\/strong><\/span>).\u00a0 Emperor Akihito (\u660e\u4ec1<\/strong><\/span>) was born on the 23rd of December.\u00a0 As a result, every year on the 23rd of December, businesses and shops close to commemorate the Emperor’s birthday.<\/p>\n

Every year starting from around 9 am in the morning, crowds of Japanese people line up to see the imperial family on the 23rd of December.\u00a0 The imperial palace is in Tokyo.\u00a0 Despite the cold and the fact that it’s early in the morning, many people, especially the elderly, show up to wave their hinomaru (\u65e5\u306e\u4e38<\/strong><\/span>), or Japanese flag.\u00a0 Each group is allowed to cheer and show their Japanese pride for about three minutes.\u00a0 After the three minutes are over the next group is shuffled in to start the cheering and waving all over again.\u00a0 Personally it’s not my thing but lots of people seem to enjoy it.<\/p>\n

Usually on this day the Emperor gives a speech about his reflections on the end of the year and what the new year will bring.\u00a0 You’ll also find a lot of uyoku dantai (\u53f3\u7ffc\u56e3\u4f53<\/strong>) members patrolling the area as well.\u00a0 The ukoku dantai (\u53f3\u7ffc\u56e3\u4f53<\/strong>) is a nationalist right wing party that holds a nostalgic fondness for the past, especially the era between WWl and WWll when Japan used to have colonies in East and Southeast Asia.\u00a0 They ride about in black vans called gaisensha (\u8857\u5ba3\u8eca<\/strong>).\u00a0 The gaisensha (\u8857\u5ba3\u8eca<\/strong>) is decorated with the Japanese flag and equipped with loud speakers.\u00a0 The gaisensha (\u8857\u5ba3\u8eca<\/strong>) will drive around the block blasting nationalist rhetoric and will feature the Japanese anthem the kimigayo (\u541b\u304c\u4ee3<\/strong><\/span>) as it’s musical soundtrack.<\/p>\n

Interestingly enough, you may see members of the yakuza (\u3084\u304f\u3056<\/strong>) at the Emperor’s birthday as well.\u00a0 For those of you who don’t know what a yakuza (\u3084\u304f\u3056<\/strong>) is, it’s the Japanese mafia.\u00a0 The yakuza (\u3084\u304f\u3056<\/strong>) has always supported the imperial family.\u00a0 Well, at least they support the symbolic idea behind the imperial family, an idea that is linked to tradition and Japanese pride.\u00a0 Since the uyoku dantai (\u53f3\u7ffc\u56e3\u4f53<\/strong>) and the yakuza (\u3084\u304f\u3056<\/strong>) both dress in black suits, sometimes I really don’t know who I’m standing next to.\u00a0 I mean, what’s worse, standing next to a racist nationalist or a gang member?<\/p>\n

Well, the good thing about this event is that admission is free.\u00a0 Also, the police frisk you for weapons so I doubt there’ll be a gang war or an assination attempt of the emperor.\u00a0 It’s pretty safe.\u00a0 If you’re going to be in Japan this December, it might be a worthwhile visit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
