{"id":3792,"date":"2014-07-02T04:41:55","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T04:41:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/?p=3792"},"modified":"2018-07-25T15:27:06","modified_gmt":"2018-07-25T15:27:06","slug":"japanese-style-room-washitsu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/japanese-style-room-washitsu\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese style room &#8211; Washitsu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of the houses in Japan has a room called, &#8220;washitsu(\u548c\u5ba4\u3001\u308f\u3057\u3064)&#8221;. Washitsu simply means, &#8220;Japanese traditional style room&#8221;. \u00a0Many of the older homes used to have only washitsu&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>People often slept on Futon (\u5e03\u56e3\u3001\u3075\u3068\u3093) (some people still do these days of course), which is padded mattresses laid in the\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4.\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 was popular for traditional Japanese houses until not too long ago, when people started to build houses with Yo-shitsu(\u6d0b\u5ba4\u3001\u3088\u3046\u3057\u3064), rather than\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4. \u00a0Yo-shitsu means &#8220;western style rooms&#8221; with different types of flooring, perhaps tiles, hardwood floor, and carpeting etc.. Traditional Japanese washitsu is made with Tatami(\u7573\u3001\u305f\u305f\u307f) flooring. \u7573 is simply a rice straw mat used in\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4.\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 cannot be\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 without\u00a0\u7573 flooring.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, people often build houses with many of the\u00a0\u6d0b\u5ba4; however, they normally have at least one\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 in the house. \u00a0It is not uncommon to see many of the Japanese traditional inns or restaurants with old styles throughout Japan.<\/p>\n<p>I recently went to Udon(\u3046\u3069\u3093)restaurant with traditional\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 style rooms for dining. \u00a0This restaurant had many low tables with Zabuton (\u5ea7\u5e03\u56e3\u3001\u3056\u3076\u3068\u3093) for seating.\u00a0\u5ea7\u5e03\u56e3 is a padded small cushion to sit on. It is rare to see this style of seating in U.S., but it is pretty common here in Japan. Especially Japanese restaurants (not steak or seafood restaurants or international ones) have many \u548c\u5ba4 with this type of seating arrangements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/07\/DSC04323.jpg\" aria-label=\"DSC04323 300x225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3796 aligncenter\"  alt=\"DSC04323\" width=\"357\" height=\"268\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/07\/DSC04323-300x225.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some people say it is not comfortable to sit down on the\u00a0\u5ea7\u5e03\u56e3 like this and eat, but for me, this is just part of the culture and to be honest, this is how I grew up. \u00a0In our old house before my parents rebuilt the house in modern style, our house used to have only\u00a0\u548c\u5ba4 with Tatami flooring. We used to use low table for everything from eating to studying. For that reason, I have to say that every time I come to a room like this, I feel more relaxed and feel much comfortable.
