We’ve already\u00a0talked about the \u3066<\/strong> form + \u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> as being used to express the present progress, but did you know that there are other uses of the \u3066<\/strong> form + \u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When verbs of movement like \u884c\u304f<\/strong> (to go), \u6765\u308b<\/strong> (to come), \u5e30\u308b<\/strong> (to return), \u51fa\u308b<\/strong> (to go out), and \u5165\u308b<\/strong> (to enter) is combined with the \u3066<\/strong> form, the time of when the action takes place is not always in the present progressive :<\/p>\n

\u4f50\u85e4\u3055\u3093\u306f\u90e8\u5c4b\u306b\u5165\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = Mr. Sat\u014d is in the room.<\/p>\n

(\u3055\u3068\u3046<\/strong>\/\u4f50\u85e4<\/strong> = Sat\u014d. \u3055\u3093<\/strong> = Mr. \u306f<\/strong> = particle. \u3078\u3084<\/strong>\/\u90e8\u5c4b<\/strong> = room. \u306b<\/strong> = particle. \u306f\u3044\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\/\u5165\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = enter)<\/p>\n

In this case, the sentence can be interpreted as, “Mr. Sat\u014d entered the room and is still there”.<\/p>\n

There may be some ambiguity as to the meaning of certain sentences :<\/p>\n

\u76ca\u5b50\u3055\u3093\u306f\u30d6\u30e9\u30a6\u30b9\u3092\u7740\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = Ms. Masuko is putting on a blouse\/Ms. Masuko is wearing a blouse<\/p>\n

(\u307e\u3059\u3053<\/strong>\/\u76ca\u5b50<\/strong> = Masuko. \u3055\u3093 <\/strong>= Ms. \u306f<\/strong> = particle. \u30d6\u30e9\u30a6\u30b9<\/strong> = blouse. \u3092<\/strong> = particle. \u304d\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\/\u7740\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = wearing\/putting)<\/p>\n

The example above could mean, “Ms. Masuko is putting on a blouse right now” or “Ms. Masuko put a blouse on, and she still has the blouse on”.<\/p>\n

\u3066<\/strong> form + \u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> can also be used to indicate a change in status :<\/p>\n

\u65b0\u3055\u3093\u306f\u7d50\u5a5a\u3057\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = Mr. Arata is married<\/p>\n

(\u3042\u3089\u305f<\/strong>\/\u65b0<\/strong> = Arata. \u3055\u3093<\/strong> = Mr. \u306f<\/strong> = particle. \u3051\u3063\u3053\u3093\u3057\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\/\u7d50\u5a5a\u3057\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = married)<\/p>\n

In other words, Mr. Arata was single before, but now he’s married.<\/p>\n

\u3066<\/strong> form + \u3044\u307e\u3059 <\/strong>can also be used to express a habitual action :<\/p>\n

\u9ad8\u6a4b\u3055\u3093\u306f\u6bce\u65e5\u30c6\u30cb\u30b9\u3092\u3057\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong> = Mr. Takahashi plays tennis every day<\/p>\n
