Everyday, we are constantly watching what time it is. \u00a0I find myself constantly making sure if I have enough time before my next meeting or conference call. Luckily these days, our phone is a big help with customizable tone, it will alert you 15 minutes before your event takes place.<\/p>\n

In today’s blog, I would like to go over from the basics to somewhat tricky part of telling time in Japanese. Telling time in Japanese is pretty simple, once you follow the basic rule, you will get it just like that. So, Read on~.<\/p>\n

Let’s first start off with this question… What time is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ima nanjii desuka? – \u4eca\u3001\u4f55\u6642\u3067\u3059\u304b\uff1f\uff08\u3044\u307e\u3001\u306a\u3093\u3058\u3067\u3059\u304b\uff1f\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is probably one of the 100 must know Japanese phrases.<\/p>\n

Answering what time its~<\/p>\n

Simply,<\/p>\n

1 o’clock – Ichi Ji \u00a0(1 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

2\u00a0o’clock – Ni Ji\u3000(2 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

3\u00a0o’clock – San Ji\u3000(3 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

4\u00a0o’clock – Yo Ji\u3000(4 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

5\u00a0o’clock – Go Ji\u3000(5 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

6\u00a0o’clock – Roku Ji\u3000(6 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

7\u00a0o’clock – Hichi Ji or Shichi Ji\u3000(7 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

8\u00a0o’clock – Hachi Ji\u3000(8 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

9\u00a0o’clock -Ku Ji\u3000(9 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

10\u00a0o’clock – Ju- Ji\u3000(10 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

11\u00a0o’clock – Ju-ichi Ji\u3000(11 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

12\u00a0o’clock – Ju-ni Ji\u3000(12 \u6642\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are answering “It’s 2\u00a0o’clock.” to someone, you would say “Ni ji desu.” simply add “desu” at the end.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So, how would you say, 12:30 or 1:30?<\/p>\n

1:30 – Ichi Ji han \u00a0(1 \u6642\u534a)<\/strong><\/p>\n

2:30 – Ni Ji han\u3000(2 \u6642\u534a)<\/strong><\/p>\n

3:30 – San Ji han\u3000(3 \u6642\u534a)<\/strong><\/p>\n

4:40 – Yo Ji han\u3000(4 \u6642\u534a)<\/strong><\/p>\n

5:30 ~Go Ji han\u3000(5 \u6642\u534a)<\/strong><\/p>\n

etc….<\/p>\n

Pretty simple, just add “han” for half an hour.. So, “It’s 3:30.” will be “San ji han desu.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What about the time in between? 2:22 or 2:45 or 5:12 etc… Well, for these, you will need to know how to count the numbers between 1 to 59 in Japanese. \u00a0Let’s review them here. \u00a0These numbers are slightly different when applying to telling time. Read carefully, the third column is about adding “end” to telling time. In English, it will be “minute” part. Notice depending on the numbers, it changes from “fun” to “pun”.<\/p>\n
