I say no reason, meaning that even when we know it&#8217;s not our fault, we often end up saying, &#8220;sorry&#8217;. I remember when I first took my ESL class back in the college, ESL teacher used to tell us, &#8220;Don&#8217;t say &#8220;sorry&#8221; unless you know for sure that it is your fault! Otherwise, people would think that it was all your fault when it wasn&#8217;t.&#8221; \u00a0Do you agree with that?<\/p>\n<p>In Japanese culture, just because we say, &#8220;Sumimasen (\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093)&#8221; or &#8220;Gomen nasai (\u3054\u3081\u3093\u306a\u3055\u3044)&#8221;, it doesn&#8217;t mean that we feel we are doing something bad. Part of the reasons why we say that is to be polite, in a way. Or other times, I believe we say these in replace of actually, &#8220;Thank you&#8221;, believe it or not.<\/p>\n<p>So, with that said, Let&#8217;s get today&#8217;s lesson started!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Sumimasen (\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)Excuse me = Sumimasen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you want to get someone&#8217;s attention to ask direction, this is a perfect timing to use this expression.<\/p>\n<p>Excuse me, can you please tell me how to get to the stadium?<\/p>\n<p>==&gt;\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3001\u30b9\u30bf\u30b8\u30a2\u30e0\u3000\u306e\u3000\u3044\u304d\u304b\u305f\u3000\u304a\u3057\u3048\u3066\u3000\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002\uff08\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3001\u30b9\u30bf\u30b8\u30a2\u30e0\u3000\u306e\u3000\u884c\u304d\u65b9\u3000\u6559\u3048\u3066\u3000\u4e0b\u3055\u3044\u3002\uff09Sumimasen, stajiamu no ikikata oshiete kudasai.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)I am sorry. = Sumimasen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you want to casually, say sorry, you can use Sumimasen.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I am sorry for spilling some water here on a table. ==&gt; \u30c6\u30fc\u30d6\u30eb\u306e\u3000\u3046\u3048\u306b\u3000\u304a\u307f\u305a\u3092\u3000\u3053\u307c\u3057\u3066\u3000\u3057\u307e\u3063\u3066\u3000\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3002\uff08\u30c6\u30fc\u30d6\u30eb\u306e\u4e0a\u306b\u3000\u304a\u6c34\u3092\u3000\u3053\u307c\u3057\u3066\u3057\u307e\u3063\u3066\u3000\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3002\uff09Table no ueni omizu o koboshite shimatte sumimasen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)Thank you = Sumimasen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, people often say Sumimasen, rather than saying &#8220;Thank you&#8221;, in Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>For example, In stead of saying, &#8220;Thank you for showing me how to use this. &#8220;, we sometimes say &#8221; Sorry I took your time on showing me how to use this.&#8221;.
