Hi everyone, hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Some of you might be out on vacation, others might be just staying in to relax and enjoy quality time with your friends and family.<\/p>\n

Starting this month, I thought I would start a basic Japanese lesson to give you a foundation of Japanese, from the simple ones to a more complex ones. These are must know basic rules in Japanese in my opinion so you can have a good foundation on learning more complex rules later on.<\/p>\n

In my first post in this series, I would like to cover “~desu(\u3067\u3059), and ~masu(\u307e\u3059)”. Desu & Masu expressions are critical to know so you can speak clean and polite Japanese at all times which you can apply to any situation.<\/p>\n

Let’s get started!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1.\u308f\u305f\u3057\u306e\u3000\u306a\u307e\u3048\u306f\u3000\u3055\u3068\u3053\u3000\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/strong>\uff08\u79c1\u306e\u3000\u540d\u524d\u306f\u3000\u3055\u3068\u3053\u3000\u3067\u3059\u3002<\/strong>\uff09<\/p>\n

Watashino namae wa Satoko desu<\/strong>. My name is Satoko.<\/p>\n

2. \u3053\u3053\u304c\u3000\u308f\u305f\u3057\u306e\u3000\u3044\u3048\u3000\u3067\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff08\u3053\u3053\u304c\u3000\u79c1\u306e\u3000\u5bb6\u3000\u3067\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n

Koko ga watashi no ie desu<\/strong>. This is my house.<\/p>\n

Kyou ani wa sakka- no renshu ni itte imasu<\/strong>. My brother went to soccer practice today.<\/p>\n

Korekara kaimono e ikimasu<\/strong>. I am going shopping now.<\/p>\n

4. \u3042\u3068\u3067\u3000\u3079\u3093\u304d\u3087\u3046\u3000\u3057\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff08\u5f8c\u3067\u3000\u52c9\u5f37\u3000\u3057\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n

Ato de benkyo shimasu<\/strong>. I am going to study later.<\/p>\n

5. \u3069\u3061\u3089\u3092\u3000\u304b\u304a\u3046\u304b\u3000\u307e\u3088\u3063\u3066\u3000\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff08\u3069\u3061\u3089\u3092\u3000\u304b\u304a\u3046\u304b\u3000\u307e\u3088\u3063\u3066\u3000\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/strong>\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n

Dochira o kaouka mayotte imasu<\/strong>. I am not sure which one to buy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When you use “desu & masu” at the end of your sentence, it normally softens up the whole expression. It sounds much cleaner and more polite than using “da(\u3060) & dearu(\u3067\u3042\u308b)” .<\/p>\n
