One of the many occasions when you need to communicate using honorific approach is when you are on the phone. \u00a0It all depends who is calling you, of course, but for the most part, in business you need to sound polite in a way that it does not sound rude to anyone. No matter what the age of the caller, if you are dealing with your customers, you will also need to sound polite, of course.<\/p>\n

In English when you come back to your phone after placing someone on hold, we might say, “Thank you so much for waiting.”, but this could be translated into different expressions in Japanese.<\/p>\n

For example, if you are talking to your close friend, this could be translated into something, “Mattte ite kurete honto ni arigato.(\u5f85\u3063\u3066\u3044\u3066\u3000\u304f\u308c\u3066\u3000\u672c\u5f53\u306b\u3000\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3002\u307e\u3063\u3066\u3044\u3066\u3000\u304f\u308c\u3066\u3000\u307b\u3093\u3068\u3046\u306b\u3000\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3002)”<\/p>\n

However, if this was your client, you would want to say “Omachi itadaki arigato gozaimashita. (\u304a\u5f85\u3061\u3000\u3044\u305f\u3060\u304d\u3000\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002\u3000\u304a\u307e\u3061\u3000\u3044\u305f\u3060\u304d\u3000\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002)”<\/p>\n
