or &#8220;year old&#8221; to the number to state your age.\u00a0 In Japanese, it works much like the same way, expect that there are some pronunciation changes that some of the numbers go through.\u00a0 The suffix sai (<strong>\u3055\u3044<\/strong>) means &#8220;years old&#8221;.\u00a0 See if you can see any irregularities in the numbers:<\/p>\n<p>1 year old: <strong>\u3044\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 years old: <strong>\u306b\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3 years old: <strong>\u3055\u3093\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4 years old: <strong>\u3088\u3093\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5 years old: <strong>\u3054\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6 years old: <strong>\u308d\u304f\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7 years old: <strong>\u306a\u306a\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>8 years old: <strong>\u306f\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>9 years old: <strong>\u304d\u3085\u3046\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10 years old: <strong>\u3058\u3085\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ok, so the irregular ones are 1 and 8.\u00a0 1 just by itself is <strong>\u3044\u3061<\/strong>, but when you add the suffix <strong>\u3055\u3044<\/strong> to it, it changes to <strong>\u3044\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0 The same goes for 8.\u00a0 8 by itself is <strong>\u306f\u3061<\/strong>, but when you add <strong>\u3055\u3044<\/strong> you get <strong>\u306f\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0 Both 1 and 8 end in <strong>\u3061<\/strong>.\u00a0 When <strong>\u3061<\/strong> is pronounced just before <strong>\u3055<\/strong>, the pronounciation will change to either <strong>\u306f\u3063<\/strong> or <strong>\u3044\u3063<\/strong>.\u00a0 These changes are meant so that it&#8217;ll be easier to pronounce.\u00a0 One more thing I want to note is that 1 years old and 8 years old is pronounced as issai (<strong>\u3044\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>) not itsusai (<strong>\u3044\u3064\u3055\u3044<\/strong>), and hassai (<strong>\u306f\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>) not hatsusai (<strong>\u306f\u3064\u3055\u3044<\/strong>).\u00a0 The small tsu (<strong>\u3063<\/strong>) indicates a double consonant.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to note is that 4 years old is <strong>\u3088\u3093\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>\u3088\u3055\u3044<\/strong> and <strong>\u3057\u3055\u3044<\/strong> is incorrect.\u00a0 Also for 7 years old, <strong>\u3057\u3061\u3055\u3044<\/strong> will not work.\u00a0 If you look at the explantion above, you&#8217;ll see why.\u00a0 For 9 years old, its <strong>\u304d\u3085\u3046\u3055\u3044<\/strong> not <strong>\u304f\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To form numbers 11-19, just take the second digit ending and add it to <strong>\u3058\u3085\u3046<\/strong>.\u00a0 11 years old will be <strong>\u3058\u3085\u3046\u3044\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0 1 is the second digit in 11 and since 1 years old is <strong>\u3044\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>, attach that to<strong> \u3058\u3085\u3046<\/strong> and you get 11 years old.<\/p>\n<p>One another thing to note is that you might hear people use<strong> \u306f\u305f\u3061<\/strong> for 20 years old a lot more often than <strong>\u306b\u3058\u3085\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong>.\u00a0 Technically <strong>\u306b\u3058\u3085\u3063\u3055\u3044<\/strong> is not wrong, so feel free to use it.\u00a0 Just be aware though, that <strong>\u306f\u305f\u3061<\/strong> also means the same thing.\u00a0 Just like 20 years old, 30 years old, 40, 50 and so on are formed in the same way.\u00a0 Take the number for 30 and add sai (<strong>\u3055\u3044<\/strong>).\u00a0 No biggie.<\/p>\n<p>See you next time!<\/p>\n<p>\ufffd<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In English, you state the number of years that you are, and attach the phrase &#8220;years old&#8221;
