{"id":71,"date":"2009-04-16T06:19:10","date_gmt":"2009-04-16T10:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/?p=71"},"modified":"2009-04-16T06:19:10","modified_gmt":"2009-04-16T10:19:10","slug":"titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/japanese\/titles\/","title":{"rendered":"Titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m gonna go over some common titles that you might of heard people use when they refer to other people.\u00a0 In addition to titles, I also describe them as suffixes that you attach to names.\u00a0 These suffixes can do two things: 1) they identify the relationship you have with the speaker (intimate or formal) or 2) they identify who the speaker is (male\/female, elder\/junior).<\/p>\n<p>The first suffix is <strong>\u3055\u3093<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is the most common of the honorary suffixes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s kind of like the title,\u00a0&#8220;Mr.\/Mrs.\/Ms.&#8221;.\u00a0 This suffix is really flexible in that you can use it for both genders and it doesn&#8217;t matter whether the lady is married or not.\u00a0 The important thing to remember is that it&#8217;s a title used to show politeness and respect towards someone.\u00a0 You should use this with people you&#8217;ve never met before and people older than you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The next suffix is <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong>.\u00a0 The general rule of thumb is that you use <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong> for young boys, but that&#8217;s not always the case.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard it used for women and for older men as well.\u00a0 It all depends upon the relationship of the speaker and\u00a0the person whom <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong> is being referred to.\u00a0 <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong> is generally an indication that the speaker and the person being referred to are on a first name basis.\u00a0 The important thing to remember is that you can use <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong> to refer to other people&#8217;s children, but you can&#8217;t use it to refer to your own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u3061\u3083\u3093<\/strong> is the female equaivalent, but again, it can be used towards young boys as well.\u00a0 The general rule of thumb is that It&#8217;s used for younger girls, but sometimes older and married women can be referred to this suffix as well.\u00a0 For example, an older brother may call his younger sister <strong>\u3061\u3083\u3093<\/strong> even though she&#8217;s married and has children of her own.\u00a0 <strong>\u3061\u3083\u3093<\/strong> is a form of endearment, so it&#8217;s usage indicates that the speaker and the person being referred to are on close terms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044<\/strong> literally means &#8220;teacher&#8221;, but it&#8217;s usage extends outside of the teaching profession.\u00a0 <strong>\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044<\/strong> is one of those titles that you can use on its own.\u00a0 For example, if you just called people by <strong>\u304f\u3093<\/strong> without a name in front of it, it would sound weird, but calling someone by the general title of <strong>\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044<\/strong> is not weird at all.\u00a0 The important thing to remember here is that <strong>\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044<\/strong> is used to show respect towards people who have mastered a special skill or craft.\u00a0 For example, a karate instructor would be called <strong>\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044<\/strong> and so would a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <strong>\u3055\u307e<\/strong> is a highly honorific form of <strong>\u3055\u3093<\/strong>.\u00a0 You can hear this term attached to the word &#8220;customer&#8221; in Japanese, which is <strong>\u304a\u304d\u3083\u304f\u3055\u307e<\/strong>.\u00a0 Back in the day when Japan had shogun rulers, the shogun were referred to as <strong>\u3046\u3048\u3055\u307e<\/strong>.\u00a0 The only restriction with this title is that you shouldn&#8217;t use it to refer to yourself.\u00a0 It&#8217;s considered arrogant to use it with your own name attached.\u00a0 Sometimes, <strong>\u3055\u307e<\/strong>can be a derrogative title.\u00a0 It can be used sarcastically to refer to someone who is not that good looking or a know-it-all.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an exhaustive list, so if you can think of other titles, write it in the comment box.
