An onsen (\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) means \u201chot springs\u201d in Japanese. Basically an onsen is supposed to be a bathing area where the water is hot and comes from the natural environment. There is an endless supply of hot springs in Japan, but a few stand out as unique.<\/p>\n

Arima Onsen (\u6709\u99ac\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) is famous for its two springs. Kinsen (\u91d1<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) which means \u201cgold spring\u201d has a golden brown color to the water.\u00a0 Ginsen (\u9280<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) means \u201csilver spring\u201d and is so named because of its light colored waters. Arima Onsen has been a favorite since the samurai days. The famous Hideyoshi Toyotomi (\u8c4a\u81e3\u79c0<\/strong>\u5409<\/strong>) has also visited this onsen on several occasions.<\/p>\n

D\u014dgo Onsen (\u9053\u5f8c\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) is one of the oldest onsens in Japan. Famous poets, writers and even royalty have been purported to have visited this onsen. There is a special room at D\u014dgo Onsen that is only reserved for the royal family. The D\u014dgo bathhouse is a popular bathhouse, so even if it\u2019s three stories high, it\u2019s filled to the maximum on busy days.<\/p>\n

Takanoyu Onsen (<\/strong>\u2668\u9df9<\/strong>\u306e<\/strong>\u6e6f\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) is located in a secluded place. It\u2019s a great getaway spot for those who want some quiet and privacy. Takanoyu Onsen is diverse in its services. You can try an indoor bath, and an outdoor bath. They even have a bath made especially for your feet. It\u2019s reportedly great for people who have arthritis.<\/p>\n

Wakura Onsen (\u548c\u5009\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) is a high end onsen. For those who can afford its rates there are several luxury hotels, with some as high as twenty stories. From the hotels, you can see skyscrapers and all the modern views of any city. It\u2019s a great place where the tradition of the onsen meets the modern elements of the city.<\/p>\n

Nagaragawa Onsen (\u9577\u826f\u5ddd\u6e29<\/strong>\u6cc9<\/strong>) is located in Gifu Prefecture (\u5c90\u961c\u770c<\/strong>,). This onsen is also located in a modern city. They have an outside onsen called a rotenburo (\u9732\u5929\u98a8<\/strong>\u5442<\/strong>), where you can rest and see the beautiful scenary at the same time.
