It could be that the person is physically unable to or that the person just doesn&#8217;t have enough time.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast this with this sentence:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\uc5b4\uc81c \uc219\uc81c\ub97c \ud558\uc9c0 \uc54a\uc558\uc5b4\uc694.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(<strong>\uc5b4\uc81c<\/strong> = yesterday. <strong>\uc219\uc81c<\/strong> = homework. <strong>\ub97c <\/strong>= object marking particle.<strong> \ud558\uc9c0 \uc54a\uc558\uc5b4\uc694<\/strong> = didn&#8217;t do)<\/p>\n<p>In English, this sentence would be, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t do the homework yesterday&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With this sentence: <strong>\uc624\ub298\u00a0\uc219\uc81c\ub97c\u00a0\ubabb \ud574\uc694 <\/strong>there&#8217;s an implication\u00a0that there\u00a0are some extenuating circumstances beyond the person&#8217;s control that is preventing the person from doing the homework.<\/p>\n<p>However with this sentence: <strong>\uc5b4\uc81c \uc219\uc81c\ub97c \ud558\uc9c0 \uc54a\uc558\uc5b4\uc694<\/strong>, the person is implying that he\/she simply did not do the homework.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing the difference between these two constructions is important because not using the correct construction could offend someone in a social situation.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you were to say: <strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0\uc5d0 \ubabb \uac00\uc694<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0<\/strong>\u00a0= birthday party. <strong>\uc5d0 <\/strong>= to. <strong>\ubabb \uac00\uc694<\/strong> = cannot go)<\/p>\n<p>versus <strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0\uc5d0 \uc548 \uac00\uc694<\/strong> (<strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0<\/strong>\u00a0= birthday party. <strong>\uc5d0<\/strong> = to. <strong>\uc548 \uac00\uc694<\/strong> = won&#8217;t go)<\/p>\n<p>With this sentence:\u00a0 <strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0\uc5d0 \ubabb \uac00\uc694 <\/strong>(I cannot go the birthday party), the listener could understand the sentence to mean that you would like to go, but because of some problem you can&#8217;t, while <strong>\uc0dd\uc77c\ud30c\ud2f0\uc5d0 \uc548 \uac00\uc694<\/strong> (I won&#8217;t go to the birthday party) could be taken as, you don&#8217;t wish to go, and so you won&#8217;t go to the party.
