{"id":32,"date":"2008-11-18T02:08:48","date_gmt":"2008-11-18T06:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/korean\/?p=32"},"modified":"2014-08-27T15:24:38","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T15:24:38","slug":"lets-eat-meat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/korean\/lets-eat-meat\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Eat Meat!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s post will introduce some of the most popular meat dishes in Korea.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a vegetarian, this post is not for you.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll write about some Korean dishes without meat in a future post.\u00a0 In the meantime, please don&#8217;t report me to PETA.\u00a0 For all you meat eaters out there,\u00a0this post will highlight some savory Korean dishes that I would highly recommend.\u00a0 So let&#8217;s get ready to eat meat!<\/p>\n<p>Bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>) tops the list as one of the all time Korean favorites.\u00a0 Bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>) is beef that has been marinated with soy sauce, sugar, seasame oil and garlic.\u00a0 It&#8217;s usually grilled and depending on the restaurant, may cost about $15-30.\u00a0 Some people eat bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>) with lettuce and rice.\u00a0 The lettuce acts like a taco shell and the rice and bolgi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>) serve as the filling.<\/p>\n<p>The next popular meat dish is kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>).\u00a0 Kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>) is also a beef dish.\u00a0 However unlike bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>) kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>) can be sparse in meat\u00a0with thick bones inbetween the meat.\u00a0 Kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>)\u00a0is also less tender than bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>), while costing about the same or more than bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>).\u00a0 Like bulgogi (<strong>\ubd88\uace0\uae30<\/strong>), kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>) is grilled and marinated and sometimes consumed with rice and vegetables.\u00a0 Carrots and onions are the most typically grilled with kalbi (<strong>\uac08\ube44<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re low on cash, try some samgyupsal (<strong>\uc0bc\uacb9\uc0b4<\/strong>).\u00a0 Samgyupsal (<strong>\uc0bc\uacb9\uc0b4<\/strong>) is not a beef dish.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually a pork dish.\u00a0 Samgyupsal (<strong>\uc0bc\uacb9\uc0b4<\/strong>) looks a lot like American bacon, but\u00a0 thicker in texture.\u00a0 Samgyupsal (<strong>\uc0bc\uacb9\uc0b4<\/strong>) is often grilled but not marinated.\u00a0 It&#8217;s consumed by dipping it in a sauce consisting of soy sauce, black pepper, vinegar and salt.\u00a0 Depending on the restaurant, it can be as cheap as $9 per plate.\u00a0 Typically people will order some soju (<strong>\uc18c\uc8fc<\/strong>) or a Korean alcoholic beverage with samgyupsal (<strong>\uc0bc\uacb9\uc0b4<\/strong>).\u00a0 Since soju (<strong>\uc18c\uc8fc<\/strong>) is relatively cheap as well ($1-2 per bottle), you can still get a full meal without destroying your wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;re more into seafood.\u00a0 Well then I would recommend sengsun-hwei (<strong>\uc0dd\uc120\ud68c<\/strong>).\u00a0 sengsun-hwei (<strong>\uc0dd\uc120\ud68c<\/strong>) is raw fish that has been thinly sliced.\u00a0 Sengsun-hwei (<strong>\uc0dd\uc120\ud68c<\/strong>) is marinated with rice wine, soy sauce and seasame oil.\u00a0 It is sometimes dipped in a spicy red pepper paste called kochujang (<strong>\uace0\ucd94\uc7a5<\/strong>).\u00a0 Depending on the quality of fish and the restaurant, it may cost around $17-25 per plate.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of Korean meat dishes have two things in common.\u00a0 One is that they are often marinated and two,\u00a0the use of soy sauce as a condiment or marinating sauce is preferred.\u00a0 Remember before you eat say the phrase, &#8220;chal mok ke sum ni da&#8221;
