{"id":34,"date":"2008-11-20T01:22:36","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T05:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/korean\/?p=34"},"modified":"2014-08-27T15:24:29","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T15:24:29","slug":"night-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/korean\/night-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"Night Markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re ever in South Korea don&#8217;t forget to stop by some of the most vibrant and busiest night markets in Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado let me introduce you to the Namdemun (<strong>\ub0a8\ub300\ubb38<\/strong>) Market.\u00a0 Namdemun (<strong>\ub0a8\ub300\ubb38<\/strong>) is one of the oldest marketplaces in Korea.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll find clothes, souvenir items like figurines, hair pins, and jewelry.\u00a0 A lot of the items are cheaper than what you would find in a retail store.\u00a0 If you really want the best value for your money, go to the market between the hours of 12am to 4am.\u00a0 The streets of Namdemun (<strong>\ub0a8\ub300\ubb38<\/strong>)\u00a0are less crowded at these hours; which means less customers and more sellers\u00a0who are willing to lower their prices in a last bid attempt to sell their goods.<\/p>\n<p>Next, let&#8217;s go to the Busan-kong-dong-o-shi-jang (<strong>\ubd80\uc0b0\uacf5\ub3d9\uc5b4\uc2dc\uc7a5<\/strong>) which is the Busan Cooperative Fish Market.\u00a0 This market is the largest seafood market in Korea.\u00a0 They have all sorts of fish and seafood like seaweed, oysters, octupus, squid and eels.\u00a0 I gotta warn you though, the smell can be umm&#8230;how should I say&#8230;interesting.\u00a0 Well, simply put, the Busan (<strong>\ubd80\uc0b0<\/strong>) fish market has a fishy, seawater sort of smell.\u00a0 For first time visitors, this may be a bit overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a sweet deal on electronic goods, go to the Yongsan (<strong>\uc6a9\uc0b0<\/strong>) market.\u00a0 It has a variety of name brand computers,\u00a0CD players, Ipods, video games and office equipement.\u00a0 While Youngsan (<strong>\uc6a9\uc0b0<\/strong>) is known to sell its products within a store rather than outside on the street sidewalk, you can still haggle over prices.\u00a0 In fact, some\u00a0items do not\u00a0have a price tag because it&#8217;s expected that the customer will haggle over it.\u00a0 Also, a lot of sellers at\u00a0Yongsan (<strong>\uc6a9\uc0b0<\/strong>) will allow you to test\u00a0out the machine before you buy it.\u00a0 The only thing is, just don&#8217;t break anything!<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;re more into antiques.\u00a0 Well then, let me guide you to Insadong (<strong>\uc778\uc0ac\ub3d9<\/strong>) Market.\u00a0 Insadong (<strong>\uc778\uc0ac\ub3d9<\/strong>) has all the traditional Korean ceramics, paintings and furniture you could possibly ever want.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really the place to go for anything traditional.\u00a0 A word of warning though, it can be a bit pricey.\u00a0 The goods are hand made, so some of them cost in the thousands while the most expensive can reach into the millions.\u00a0 If you want something more affordable, they have these miniature porcelain vases that you can get as souvenirs.\u00a0 Even if you don&#8217;t get to buy anything, just take a look around.\u00a0 So much of traditional Korean culture and art is alive in Insadong (<strong>\uc778\uc0ac\ub3d9<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Since these markets are not traditional shops, you can haggle with the seller to get a discount.\u00a0 If the seller makes\u00a0a ridiculous offer, sometimes customers will use the phrase, &#8220;<strong>\ubc14\uac00\uc9c0 \uc50c\uc6b0\uc9c0 \ub9c8\uc138\uc694<\/strong>&#8221; (bagaji shiuji maseyo).\u00a0 This phrase literally means, &#8220;don&#8217;t put a bucket over my head&#8221; which is similar to the English phrase &#8220;to put the wool over someone&#8217;s eyes.&#8221;\u00a0 You&#8217;ll also find that a lot of these markets are open past 12am.\u00a0 So if you want to beat the morning and afternoon rush, you can take a leisurely stroll in the wee worning hours.\u00a0 How fun!\u00a0 For some of you this is a good excuse to stay up past curfew!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re ever in South Korea don&#8217;t forget to stop by some of the most vibrant and busiest night markets in Korea.
