A business card is called a <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uba85\ud568<\/em><\/span> in Korean. Even though\u00a0<span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uba85\ud568\u00a0<\/em><\/span> is a tiny piece of paper, <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uba85\ud568<\/em> <\/span>presents a good source of information to initiate a conversation: <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uc774\ub984<\/em><\/span> (name), <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uc9c1\uc5c5<\/em><\/span> (job), <em><span style=\"color: #808000\">\uc9c1\ud568<\/span> <\/em>(title), <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\ud68c\uc0ac<\/em><\/span> (company), and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uc5f0\ub77d\ucc98<\/em><\/span> (contact information), etc.<\/p>\n<p>Korean culture is based on respecting others. When you meet someone for the first time and exchange business cards, it is important to treat their business cards with respect. The following video and note will explain appropriate manners that you can apply when you exchange business cards with Koreans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8ngkylQ1F1Q\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/8ngkylQ1F1Q<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>People usually keep their business cards in a <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uba85\ud568\uc9d1\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(business card holder or case).<\/li>\n<li>Have your business cards ready to hand out. (Don\u2019t search for it and make your counterpart to wait for you to fine your card.)<\/li>\n<li>Keep your business cards clean.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your business cards either in your shirt or inside of the suit pocket.<\/li>\n<li>For woman keep them in a purse.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce yourself before you hand out your card.<\/li>\n<li>Exchange cards while standing.<\/li>\n<li>Your name should face the other person.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t make your business cards too fancy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">*<\/span> It is important to take a look at the card and confirm the person\u2019s name, title, etc. before you put it away.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>If you are standing, keep the received card inside of your suit pocket or separate cardholder for received cards.<\/li>\n<li>When you give away your card, chest height of your counterpart is appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>It is recommended to take turns in exchanging business cards and important to receive a business card with two hands. However, when you simultaneously exchange business cards with the counterpart, hand your card with the right hand and receive the counterpart\u2019s card with the left hand, with your left palm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">*<\/span> A person with a lower rank first passes the card to a higher-ranking person. However, when you are in an equal status with your counterpart, you might exchange business cards simultaneously.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li>Do not write on the card that you just received.<\/li>\n<li>When in need, ask for permission to add a note. Use the backside of the card to add information.<\/li>\n<li>Do not play with the counterpart\u2019s card.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Every situation will be slightly different, however, remember to apply these basic protocols and show politeness during your meeting. Beside your effort to use proper etiquette, don\u2019t forget to try to use Korean phrases such as <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\uac10\uc0ac\ud569\ub2c8\ub2e4<\/em><\/span> (Thank you.) and <span style=\"color: #808000\"><em>\ucc9c\ub9cc\uc5d0\uc694<\/em><\/span> (You are welcome).
