During the year 2018, North and South Korean leaders held multiple summits and have reshaped their relationship. Two Koreas are making great progress in reducing the tension and building a peaceful relationship between them.<\/p>\n

For over seven decades, \ubd81\ud55c\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(North Korea) and \ub0a8\ud55c\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(South Korea) maintained the \ud734\uc804\uc120\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(armistice line), which also refers to the\u00a0\uad70\uc0ac<\/em>\ubd84\uacc4\uc120\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(military demarcation line). Instead of an\u00a0\uacf5\uc2dd\uc801\uc778\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(official) \ud3c9\ud654<\/em>\uc870\uc57d\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(peace treaty agreement), the \ud734\uc804<\/em>\ud611\uc815\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Armistice Agreement) was signed on July 27, 1953, and this agreement resulted in a ceasefire status between North and South Koreas. The \uacf5\ub3d9\uacbd\ube44\uad6c\uc5ed\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Joint Security Area) used to be referred to as one of the scariest places on earth, because \uad70\uc778\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(soldiers) from two Koreas stood \ub300\uba74\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(face-to-face) with their \ucd1d\uae30\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(firearms).<\/p>\n

Through multiple summits between the North Korean \uc9c0\ub3c4\uc790\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(leader) \uae40\uc815\uc740\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Kim Jung-un) and the South Korean \ub300\ud1b5\ub839\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(President) \ubb38\uc7ac\uc778\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Moon Jae-in), the two governments agreed to the changes in the area. After signing the \uad70\uc0ac\ubd84\uc57c\u00a0<\/em>\ud569\uc758\uc11c\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Comprehensive Military Agreement) on September 19, the two countries worked on \uc9c0\ub8b0<\/em>\uc81c\uac70\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(demining) in the \ube44\ubb34\uc7a5<\/em>\uc9c0\ub300\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(Demilitarized Zone) and Joint Security Area (JSA), withdrawing \ucd08\uc18c\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(guard posts), and removing firearms. The JSA area will be controlled by the trilateral effort of two Koreas and the\u00a0\uc720\uc5d4<\/em>\uc0ac\ub839\ubd80\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(United Nation command).<\/p>\n

JSA has represented physical and symbolic \ubd84\ub2e8\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(division) of the North and South Koreas for over seventy years. However, this area now symbolizes potential \ud3c9\ud654\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(peace) and \ud1b5\uc77c\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(unification) of the two Koreas. The visit to the JSA is halted temporarily due to the installation of \uac10\uc2dc<\/em>\uc7a5\ube44\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(surveillance equipment) and new guard posts. Many \ubbfc\uac04\uc778\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(civilians) and \uad00\uad11\uac1d\u00a0<\/em><\/span>(tourists) are anticipated for the opening date to access this area and freely move around in the JSA in the near future.<\/p>\n
