One is called \uc2e0\uc815 (shin-jeong: New Year\u2019s Day) and the other is \uc124\ub0a0 (Seollal: Korean New Year\u2019s Day), which is same as \uad6c\uc815 (goo-jeong: Lunar New Year\u2019s Day). \uc124\ub0a0 falls on a different date each year since it is based on the lunar calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\uc2e0\uc815 is always on the 1<sup>st<\/sup> day of January every year. \uc81c\uc57c ( jae-yah: The New Year\u2019s Eve) \ud0c0\uc885\ud589\uc0ac ( tah-jong-hang-sah: The Watch Night bell event)\u00a0 is one of the big events on \uc2e0\uc815, but Koreans don\u2019t celebrate \uc2e0\uc815 as significantly as \uad6c\uc815.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Koreans eat traditional Korean food on <\/em><em>\uc124\ub0a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Traditional \uc124\ub0a0 \uc74c\uc2dd (seollal-eum-sik: Seollal food) \u00a0is \ub5a1\uad6d (ttuk-gook: sliced rice cake soup). \uac00\ub798\ub5a1 (gah-rae-ttuk: bar rice cake) is a white and long rice cake with barely any flavor. This rice cake is the main ingredient for \ub5a1\uad6d. Koreans use \uac00\ub798\ub5a1 for wishing health and wealth. The long shape of \uac00\ub798\ub5a1 symbolizes longevity. Sliced \uac00\ub798\ub5a1looks like coins, which symbolizes wealth. It is a common Korean custom to share gifts among friends and family before \uc124\ub0a0 is approaching.<\/p>\n<p>Koreans send a basket of fruits or \ud55c\uc6b0 ( han-woo: Korean native beef) away to their family. Some employees send a bulk of \u00a0\uc120\ubb3c\uc138\ud2b8 away to their employees. The most popular items you would see from these \uc120\ubb3c\uc138\ud2b8 are expensive gifts such as \uac74\uac15\uc2dd\ud488 ( gun-gang-sik-poom: dietary supplements), \uad74\ube44 \u00a0( gool-bee: dried yellow corvina) or \uafc0 ( kkul: honey).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are traditional \uc124\ub0a0 activities, such as \uc733\ub180\uc774 (yut-nol-ee: a game of yut) , \uc81c\uae30\ucc28\uae30 (je-gi-cha-gi) and \uc5f0 \ub0a0\ub9ac\uae30 (yeon-nal-li-gi). \u00a0\uc138\ubc30 (se-bae: New Year\u2019s bow) is one of them. Some Korean children are dressed in \ud55c\ubcf5 and bow to the elders wishing for their longevity. Then the elders give \uc138\ubc43\ub3c8 (se-bae-don: money\u00a0 for bowing) away to the children.<\/p>\n<p>Koreans go \ud574\ub3cb\uc774 (hae-dot-gi: see the sunrise) trip to wish the\u00a0 best new year or spend time with family and friends. \uc0c8\ud574 \ub355\ub2f4 (sae-hae-duk-dam: a word of blessing of New Year\u2019s day) is a beautiful tradition. \ub355\ub2f4 is a word of blessing for the best in the coming year, which can be shared among family, friends, and any loved ones. Some Koreans set up new goals for the new year hoping that they don\u2019t get \uc791\uc2ec\uc0bc\uc77c (jak-sim-sam-ill: a short-lived agenda) which means you have strong will power for only three days.<\/p>\n<p>There are 12 animals representing each year and 2020 is the year of rat.\u00a0 The year of the rat symbolizes abundance and wealth.
