A year of <\/span>\ub2e4\uc0ac\ub2e4\ub09c<\/b> (dah-sah-dah-nan<\/b>: eventful) conditions and situations, 2021 is behind us and the new year, 2022 has arrived. The number of 2022 personally brings me back to some of my memories of the sci-fi movies I may watch when I was younger. These movies typically start with a quote, such as \u2018In 2022, people in the world are moving to the Moon\u2026\u2019 and a story goes on. It sounded incredibly far into the future for a little girl in the 1990\u2019s, yet it is here with us.<\/span><\/p>\n

2022 is called <\/span>\uc784\uc778\ub144<\/b> (im-in-nyeon<\/b>: the Black Tiger Year) or <\/span>it is <\/span>the Black Tiger, the 39th year in the <\/span>\uc721\uc2ed\uac11\uc790<\/b> (yook-sip-gap-ja:<\/b> sexagenary cycle). The sexagenary cycle is <\/span>the Stems-and-Branches or Ganzhi. (<\/span>https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexagenary_cycle<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many people are excited to embrace 2022 because the combination of the color of black and the animal of the tiger rarely happens. Today, I will share some big events in 2022 in Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Koreans celebrate New Year\u2019s Day Twice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some Koreans may not consider that the year of 2022 hasn\u2019t really come yet since <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/b> (goo-jeong<\/b>: Lunar New Year) is a more significant holiday than <\/span>\uc2e0\uc815<\/b> (sin-jeong<\/b>: New Year\u2019s Day) in Korea. The first of January is celebrated like the rest of the world, however Koreans do have a special way to celebrate a new coming year by celebrating <\/span>\uc124\ub0a0<\/b> (<\/b>Seollal:<\/b> Korean New Year’s Day or Lunar New Year’s Day, same as <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    This 3-day holiday, <\/span>\uc124\ub0a0<\/span> usually comes about a month later after New Year\u2019s Day. One thing you want to remember is that there is no fixed date for <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/span> because it relies on the Lunar calendar. In other words, you would likely have <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/span> on a different date every year. In 2022, <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/span> falls on the first of February. <\/span>\uad6c\uc815<\/span> \uc5f0\ud734<\/b> (yeon-hwui<\/b>: a long weekend or holiday) starts on 1<\/span>\uc6d4<\/span> 31<\/span>\uc77c<\/span> (il-wol-sam-sip-il-il: on the 31st in January) and ends on 2<\/span>\uc6d4<\/span> 1<\/span>\uc77c<\/span> (il-wol-on the 2nd in February).<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a02. <\/span>Korean Politics Calendar in 2022<\/span><\/p>\n

    In 2022, Koreans will be busy <\/span>\ud589\uc0ac\ud558\ub2e4<\/b> (hang-sah-hah-dah:<\/b> to exercise) their <\/span>\ud22c\ud45c\uad8c<\/b> (too-pyo-gwon<\/b>: voting rights) between March and June.<\/span><\/p>\n

    March:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Koreans will have a chance to vote for a new president. There is the 20th <\/span>\ub300\ud1b5\ub839\uc120\uac70<\/b> (dae-tong-ryeong-sun-guh:<\/b> a presidential election) in March. The date is on the 9th of March, and it is a <\/span>\ubc95\uc815<\/b> \uacf5\ud734\uc77c<\/b> (bup-jeong-gong-hui-il: <\/b>a legal holiday or a national holiday). Korean citizens can vote anytime between 6 am to 6 pm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    May:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \ub300\ud1b5\ub839<\/b> \ucde8\uc784\uc2dd<\/b> (dae-tong-ryeong-chi-im-sik: <\/b>the Presidential Inauguration day) is on the 10th of May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    June:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \ub3d9\uc2dc<\/b> (dong-si: <\/b>simultaneous, at the same time) <\/span>\uc9c0\ubc29\uc120\uac70<\/b> (ji-bang-sun-guh<\/b>: local\/regional election, provincial election) is on the first of June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    3. Substitute Holidays in 2022\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    There are a total number of 118 national holidays in 2022, including <\/span>\ub300\uccb4<\/b> \uacf5\ud734\uc77c<\/b> (dae-che-gong-hwui-il:<\/b> a substitute holiday). Luckily, Koreans will have two more additional holidays compared to 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \ud55c\uae00\ub0a0<\/b> (<\/span>Hangullal: <\/b>Hangul Proclamation Day)<\/span> is on the 9th of October. It happens to be on Sunday this year. I hope this extra day would bring you time to study Korean in a more enjoyable way.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    In September, <\/span>\ucd94\uc11d<\/b> (<\/b>Chuseok: <\/b>Korean Thanksgiving Day) <\/span>starts on the 9<\/span>th<\/span> and runs<\/span> through the 11th. <\/span>\ucd94\uc11d<\/span> \uc5f0\ud734<\/b> ( yeon-hwui<\/b>: a long weekend or holiday) usually lasts 3 days and the last day of <\/span>\uc5f0\ud734<\/span> this year falls on Sunday. Therefore, it will add one more day on <\/span>\uc5f0\ud734<\/span> according to <\/span>\ub300\uccb4<\/b> \uacf5\ud734\uc77c<\/b> \ubc95<\/b> (dae-che-gong-hwui-il-bup:<\/b> a law of the substitute holiday).<\/span><\/p>\n

    In the last month of 2022, Koreans will have to celebrate <\/span>\uc131\ud0c4\uc808<\/b> (seong-tahn-jeol<\/b>: Christmas) on Sunday because <\/span>\uc131\ud0c4\uc808<\/span> on Sunday is not <\/span>\uc801\uc6a9\ub418\ub2e4<\/b> (juk-yong-dwe-dah:<\/b> to be applicable) for <\/span>\ub300\uccb4<\/span> \uacf5\ud734\uc77c<\/span> \ubc95<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
