Watching Korean movies with English subtitles is a great way to learn Korean.\u00a0 I’m going to list a couple of movies that are\/were critically acclaimed by the South Korean public.<\/p>\n

The tension and strife between North and South Korea is a popular theme for many Korean movies.\u00a0 Take the movie Shiri<\/em> (\uc2dc\ub9ac<\/strong>).\u00a0 Shiri (\uc2dc\ub9ac<\/strong>) is a movie about North Korean spies infiltrating South Korea.\u00a0 You’ll have to see what happens, but it’s a action\/thriller movie.\u00a0 It contains a lot of technical\/science jargon and is perfect for advanced Korean students.\u00a0 Then there’s the movie JSA<\/em> which stands for Joint Security Area (\uacf5\ub3d9\uacbd\ube44\uad6c\uc5ed<\/strong>).\u00a0 JSA (\uacf5\ub3d9\uacbd\ube44\uad6c\uc5ed<\/strong>) is a mystery thriller dealing with the South\/North Korean border.\u00a0 Lastly, my favorite is Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (\ud0dc\uad6d\uae30 \ud718\ub0a0\ub9ac\uba70<\/strong>).\u00a0 It’s based on a true story of two brothers torn apart by war, and finally tragically reuniting when they face each other in battle.<\/p>\n

The next two movies are philosophical or what I call “thinking” movies.\u00a0 The messages in these movies are not always black and white and a lot is left to the viewer’s interpretation.\u00a0 For example the movie, Spring,<\/em> Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring<\/em> (\ubd04\uc5ec\ub984\uac00\uc744\uaca8\uc6b8\uadf8\ub9ac\uace0\ubd04<\/strong>) by the director Kim Kiduk (\uae40\uae30\ub355<\/strong>) is about a man who wrestles with his past through the various seasons.\u00a0 There is a lot of metaphor in this movie, so if you’re looking for a light, funny, comedy, you’ll probably want to steer away from this one.\u00a0 The movie Old Boy<\/em> (\uc62c\ub4dc\ubcf4\uc774<\/strong>) by director Bak Chanuk (\ubc15\ucc2c\uc6b1<\/strong>) is also one of those deep thinking movies.\u00a0 If you feel uncomfortable with gore, blood and pure, raw emotion, this may not be the movie for you.<\/p>\n

Interestingly enough, Hollywood has recreated some Korean classics.\u00a0 The movie My Sassy Girl<\/em> starring Elisha Cuthbert, is based on the Korean version of My Sassy Girl (\uc5fd\uae30\uc801\uc778 \uadf8\ub140<\/strong>).\u00a0 Trust me, the Korean version is better.\u00a0 The Korean version has the right amount of humor and heartfelt emotions.\u00a0 It’s a great love story.\u00a0 The movie The Lake House<\/em> starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves is based on the Korean movie II Mare<\/em> (\u6642\u8d8a\u611b<\/strong>).\u00a0 It’s another love story as well.<\/p>\n
