Kim Deuk Shin is known for his depictions of the daily tasks performed by commoners. One such painting is <strong>\ub300\uc7a5\uac04 <\/strong><strong>\uc9c0\ubcf8\ub2f4\ucc44<\/strong> (<strong>\u7d19\u672c\u6de1<\/strong><strong>\u5f69<\/strong>), which is a painting of several blacksmiths working in a smithy. His paintings are valuable because modern scholars study them to learn about the past.<\/p>\n<p>Shin Saimdang (<strong>\uc2e0\uc0ac\uc784\ub2f9<\/strong>) was unusual in that she was a female artist in a rigidly masculine society. Shin Saimdang was the only child, so she was educated like that of a male child. Her husband was also understanding and allowed her to spend her time writing poetry and calligraphy. She is known for her insect paintings like the one in<strong>\ucd08\ucda9\ub3c4<\/strong> (<strong>\u8349\u87f2<\/strong><strong>\u5716<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Byeon Sang Byeok (<strong>\ubcc0\uc0c1\ubcbd<\/strong>) is well known for his cat paintings. One of his more famous works is called \u00a0<strong>\uad6d\uc815\ucd94\ubb18<\/strong> (<strong>\u83ca\u5ead\u79cb<\/strong><strong>\u732b<\/strong>), which means, \u201can autumn cat in the garden with chrysanthemums\u201d. His depiction of cats were realistic and detailed, with texture, composition and color. Byeon Sang Byeok\u2019s cat drawings also demonstrate the element of movement. He often drew cats in positions where they are about to run or jump.<\/p>\n<p>Yun Duseo (<strong>\uc724\ub450\uc11c<\/strong>), also known by his pen name <strong>\uacf5\uc7ac<\/strong>, is famous for his self portrait (shown on left). His portrait is praised because it is lifelike and shows a high degree of painting mastery for the Joseon Period. Yun Duseo was born from an educated elite family. He passed the national exam, but gave up a government position to devote his whole life to painting.<\/p>\n<p>Nam Gyeu (<strong>\ub0a8\uacc4\uc6b0<\/strong>) is renown for his butterfly paintings. His nickname was nam nabi (<strong>\ub0a8\ub098\ube44<\/strong>) or \u201cbutterfly Nam\u201d. His paintings of butterflies and moths are celebrated for their purity, bright colors and attention to detail. Nam Gyeu was born in a high ranking family.
