12 Things Language Learners Like Posted by on Dec 1, 2014 in Archived Posts

We’ve talked about 10 problems that all language learners face (and 10 more, for good measure), but what about the joys of learning a language? There’s a reason—or 12—that we all love it so much. Here’s our list, now tell us what’s on yours.

1. Having multilingual conversations… with yourself.

1

We all do it.

2. Reliving your childhood in another language.2

You now have the perfect excuse to rewatch all of your favorite children’s movies (dubbed into another language.)

3. Eavesdropping on conversations in another language.

3

The only thing better than spying on stranger’s conversations is spying in another language. How very Jason Bourne of you.

4. Singing foreign language songs.

4

Cause you’re the Queen Bey in German.

5. Clicking the “Never Translate” button when your web browser asks if you’d like to translate the page.

5Machine translations? Ew. Thanks, but no thanks.

6. Possessing a different personality for each language you know.6

Quiet English speaker by day, sassy Portuguese speaker by night.

7. Turning off the subtitles because you just don’t need them anymore.7

No seriously, it feels this good.

8. Using slang correctly, as if you’ve been speaking the language your whole life.8

It’s kind of like teaching your parents to say YOLO.

9. Swearing in public using your second language.9

What they don’t understand won’t hurt them.

10. Using a new word or grammar concept naturally, without having to stop to think about it mid-sentence.

10

The subjunctive ain’t got nothin’ on you.

11. Laughing at ridiculous translations fails.

11

We’re looking at YOU, Google Translate.

12. Strategizing about which language to learn next, even though you just started a new one.

12It’s not an addiction, it’s a hobby!

  1. Hayley:

OMG I was having a bad language day (surely you know what I mean) and a bad day in general, but these made me laugh so hard that I am now in much better spirits. Im so happy to know that I’m not the only one who had an internal party when they first used subjunctive or, more recently, russian genitive case without having to think through it first. Those little things are so satisfying and people who don’t learn languages as a hobby don’t get it! Thank you for this! 🙂

  2. Trinh Do:

I’ve done all of these tricks, no wonder I’m a linguomania!

  3. Chris Huff:

I literally just did number 12 about fifteen minutes ago :O

  4. Marissa:

Great post! I thought I was alone!!!!!
