6 Reasons to Love the Word of the Day Courses Posted by on Mar 28, 2016 in Archived Posts

If you’re anything like me, you subscribe to one of our Word of the Day emails, but you haven’t actually learned a new word each day. Don’t get me wrong—I open them, every day. I read the phrase and listen to the audio, and it’s a good start. But then I close my email and forget about it, thereby forgetting what I just “learned”.

That minute or two of engagement isn’t enough for the average learner. Most of us have to do more to really learn and remember the day’s word. Until now, we’ve left that up to you, but no longer! I am thrilled to introduce our Word of the Day courses, available in Transparent Language Online. Word of the Day devotees, you’re going to love this… here are just a few reasons why.

1.Words you’ll actually use… and some for laughs.

The Word of the Day content is unlike anything you’ll find in a textbook or on audio tape. These lessons cover the actual spoken language—you know, those words and phrases you always wanted to ask your teacher about, but never quite built up the courage to do so. You never know when you’ll need to say things like “not in a million years” …or “bumpkin”.

We remember about 10-20% of what we read or hear, but up to 80-90% of what we do. Unfortunately, opening an email or retweeting doesn’t really count as doing. The Word of the Day courses let you interact with those new words and phrases we send to your email through listening, speaking, reading, and writing—now that’s a lot to do!

It’s fun to receive a new word and phrase in your email each day. But it’s effective to really engage with it long after that email is buried in your inbox. With Fill in the Blank and Matching, you can dissect each phrase and understand how the pieces fit together.

4. Speak up!

If you’re learning a language, chances are you want to be able to speak it. Pronunciation Practice lets you compare your accent to that of a native speaker, while Multiple Choice lets you select the correct answer using only your voice!

5. Test yourself.

Let’s face it – we all hated exams in school. But how do you measure what you actually know? Each lesson includes an assessment, so you can put your Word of the Day knowledge to the test.

One word per day adds up quickly, so it’s easy to let a few words slip. But don’t fear! These courses are tied to a unique refresh system in the program that keeps track of what you’ve learned and reminds you to practice older words periodically. We want you to remember all 365 new words at the end of the year.wotd stale

Meaghan is the Marketing Communications Manager at Transparent Language. She speaks enough French and Spanish to survive, and remembers enough Hausa to say "Hello my name is Meaghan, I'm studying Hausa." (But sadly that's it).
