Online Language Lessons to Address COVID-19 Posted by on Apr 10, 2020 in For Learners, Learning Material Updates

Looking for a meaningful way to address COVID-19 in your language classes, or incorporate it into your personal language studies? The COVID-19 lessons from Transparent Language Online are now freely available for anyone to use.

You might not want to talk about COVID-19 with your language students, or you might be using language learning as an escape from the news cycle right now. And that’s totally fine! But for those of you looking for ways to address the elephant in the room with your students or stay informed for your own benefit, we want to help.

To help you digest the news in a way that feels informative and productive, we are creating online language lessons based on COVID-19 news reports from around the world. The lessons are published in Transparent Language Online*, but we’re making them freely available for personal use or for use with your language classes.

Transparent Language Online COVID-19 Lessons

Each lesson centers around an ILR2/CEFR B2/Advanced-Low level authentic article from the target language discussing recent pandemic-related news, including how certain countries/cultures are responding, updates from doctors and public health experts, and more. The lesson will teach key vocabulary from the article so learners can better understand the topics and be prepared to discuss them. Lessons also include native speaker audio and a series of interactive activities that build related listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Below you’ll find a list of links to the open COVID-19 lessons in 12 languages and dialects. Our team will be creating new lessons as events unfold, so we’ll continue to update the list below with new lesson links as they become available. If you’re finding the lessons useful, bookmark this page and check back for the latest lessons—and feel free to share with anyone you think may benefit.

*If you already have a Transparent Language Online account, log in to access these lessons! On your learning dashboard, click on the Browse tab, then look for a category called “Major News Lessons”. (On Mobile, access Browse via the hamburger menu in the top right corner.)
