Are. Pumped. We&#8217;re excited for you, but we also feel the need to warn you, learning a language can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 1: SO! EXCITED!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re going to learn Spanish and impress your boss. You\u2019re going to learn Arabic so you can finally speak to your husband\u2019s family. You\u2019re going to laugh along when the ladies at the nail salon make fun of you in Chinese, because the joke will finally be on them, right? Yes, you\u2019re super excited right now, it\u2019s all going to be SO MUCH FUN.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/Smoochy-GIF.gif\" aria-label=\"Smoochy GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Smoochy GIF\"  alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/Smoochy-GIF.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 2: Very Confident<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve picked up some study materials, enrolled in a class, harassed every Brazilian-looking person in a 12 block radius to practice the 10 words you know in Portuguese. It\u2019s new, it\u2019s fun, it\u2019s exciting! You\u2019re going to be fluent in no time!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/Kitten-GIF_21.gif\" aria-label=\"Kitten GIF 21\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Kitten GIF_2\"  alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/Kitten-GIF_21.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 3: Moderately Less Confident But Still Determined<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hmm\u2026 you\u2019ve made it past the first lesson, and all of the pleasantries are over. No more \u201cBonjour!\u201d, a lot more \u2013er, \u2013ir, and \u2013re verb conjugations. You feel so close to understanding all these new concepts, but you just keep getting STUCK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/fox-GIF_3.gif\" aria-label=\"Fox GIF 3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"fox GIF_3\"  alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2013\/04\/fox-GIF_3.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 4: Struggling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What IS that letter? Am I saying this right?\u00a0Okay so speaking this is a little more difficult than expected. You know a few hundred words and you can ask for &#8220;more bread, please&#8221;, so you don\u2019t really need to know anything else anyway, right? Subjunctive mood? Genitive case? Remember that you want tell your mother-in-law that you don\u2019t actually like her cooking\u2026 in GERMAN!? That\u2019s right, get motivated again.\u00a0Find some new resources to make things fun. Watch funny Youtube videos in Italian. Read the Harry Potter novels translated into Dutch\u2014they were written for a 14 year old? Was. Delicious. Then of course you tried to ask the waiter for the check, and accidentally asked for his phone number. But, whatever.
