Chances are someone (or practically everyone) has asked you, completely bewildered, \u201cWhy on earth would you learn <em>that<\/em> language?\u201d Here are a few replies you can choose from. Or, heck, send them all of these fine reasons to learn whatever language your heart desires:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. I\u2019m making gains with my brain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Time spent learning a language, any language, is time well spent. Nobody would judge you for exercising your body, so why should they judge you for exercising your brain? There are countless <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/2013\/12\/02\/5-cognitive-benefits-of-bilingualism\/\">cognitive benefits associated with bilingualism<\/a>. One day all of those judgers will be jealous of your mental muscles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/07\/VTPcPTg.gif\" aria-label=\"VTPcPTg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2193\"  alt=\"VTPcPTg\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/07\/VTPcPTg.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. I can speak to more people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Who cares if the language is spoken by 40 million people or 4,000 people\u2014learning another language opens up new lines of communication. That\u2019s still 4,000 more people\u2014and 4,000 more amazing lives, experiences, and stories\u2014that you have access to, that your monolingual friends will miss out on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/did-we-just-become-best-friends-yep.gif\" aria-label=\"Did We Just Become Best Friends Yep\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2184\"  alt=\"did-we-just-become-best-friends-yep\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/did-we-just-become-best-friends-yep.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. I can add a \u201cLanguage Skills\u201d section on my resume.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Even if you won\u2019t need that particular language for your position, employers look favorably upon bilinguals. And for jobs that <\/em>do<em> require that language that nobody on earth speaks? Well, you\u2019re a shoe-in!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/tgfm.gif\" aria-label=\"Tgfm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2179\"  alt=\"tgfm\" width=\"266\" height=\"267\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/tgfm.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a04.\u00a0I can enjoy more music, books, and TV shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Sure, books have translations, TV shows have subtitles, and so on. But when you learn a new language, you open up a new world of literature, music, movies, and beyond. Chances are, if your language is really uncommon, you <\/em>won\u2019t <em>find many translated versions, anyway. Learning an uncommon language is kinda like that. Learn with your spouse or a friend and have private conversations in public! And if you <\/em>do<em> come across someone who speaks that language, you\u2019ll have an instant connection with them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/classified.gif\" aria-label=\"Classified\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2181\"  alt=\"classified\" width=\"400\" height=\"203\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/classified.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>6.\u00a0My confidence is through the roof.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Yard work can be tough, and you don\u2019t <\/em>really<em> have to do it, but don\u2019t you just feel so good after you\u2019ve finished? You get to look at your perfectly manicured lawn and pristine flowerbeds and feel great about yourself. The same feeling applies to learning a language, especially a less common language! It\u2019s something you\u2019re doing for you, and it\u2019s one heck of an accomplishment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/proud.gif\" aria-label=\"Proud\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2182\"  alt=\"proud\" width=\"245\" height=\"320\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2014\/05\/proud.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>7.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>I\u2019m better prepared to learn a more \u201cuseful\u201d language than you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The more languages you know, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/2014\/05\/05\/in-one-language-and-out-the-other-why-learning-languages-gets-easier-each-time\/\">the easier it is to learn another.<\/a> Learning a \u201cuseless\u201d language now will leave you better prepared to learn other languages in the future, if you feel like it.
